Paul Markovich

Paul Markovich is the current President & CEO at Blue Shield of California. Paul has previously held leadership positions at Manifest MedEx, America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), and Definity Health.

Paul Markovich began their career in 1995 as the Director of Product Management at Blue Shield of California. In this role, they were responsible for driving profitable membership growth in commercial and Medicare businesses through the design and implementation of new products and changes to existing products. Paul helped reverse a three-year trend of membership and profit declines by introducing new products such as Access+ HMO, the first HMO to allow self-referrals to specialists. Between 1994 and 1998, membership increased by 700,000 and revenue by $1.1 billion under their leadership.

In 2001, Markovich left Blue Shield of California to join Definity Health as the Pacific Business Group on Health Relationship Manager. In this role, they were responsible for convincing a San Francisco-based business coalition to adopt Definity Health’s consumer-driven health care plan and to design a future business model that would fit both Definity Health’s and PBGH’s needs.

Markovich left Definity Health in 2002 and rejoined Blue Shield of California, where they have served as the President & CEO since 2011. During their tenure, they have helped lead the company through some of its most challenging times, including the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the launch of Covered California, the state’s health insurance exchange. Under their leadership, Blue Shield of California has become one of the state’s leading health insurers, with over 3.5 million members.

Paul Markovich has a Master's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford. Paul also has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in International Political Economy from Colorado College.
