Uber’s chief operating officer and chief marketing officer are leaving

Uber’s Chief Operating Officer Barney Harford and Chief Marketing Officer Rebecca Messina are stepping down, according to an internal email sent by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. The executive shake-up comes just a month after the ride-hailing company went public. Khosrowshahi wrote in the email that he wants to be more involved in day-to-day operations and the heads of Uber’s core businesses should report directly to him.

Because of the organizational change, Harford agreed that the chief operating officer role “no longer makes sense” and decided to leave the company. Harford, the former CEO of Orbitz, has held the COO position at Uber for 18 months. Uber's CMO Rebecca Messina is also stepping down and Jill Hazelbaker, the current SVP of will lead a combined Marketing, Communications, and Policy team.

In the email sent to employees, Khosrowshahi said: "There’s never really a right time to announce departures or changes like this, but with the IPO behind us, I felt this was a good moment to simplify our org and set us up for the future."

Notably, Andrew Macdonald continues to rise in the ranks and has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Global Rides, reporting to Khosrowshahi. Reporting to Macdonald, will be Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty (International), Brooks Entwistle (Development), Gus Fuldner (Safety & Insurance), Ronnie Gurion (Uber for Business), Sarfraz Maredia (US & Canada), and Troy Stevenson (Community).
