Between March and August 2020, the for-profit crowdfunding platform GoFundMe raised over $625 million through 9 million donations for people, causes, and charities. This stunning output is perhaps not surprising given the ongoing economic divide caused by the pandemic, but it has allowed the company to make several big hires recently, including new president Juan Benitez.
On Monday, GoFundMe announced another important addition in Musa Tariq, who joins the company today as its new Chief Marketing Officer. According to a press release, Tariq will be responsible for driving the company’s marketing, brand, and communications functions and will report to CEO Tim Cadogan.
“With his deep understanding of global consumer markets and expertise in building communities online, Musa will be instrumental in helping us bring the positive power of GoFundMe to more people worldwide and find new and dynamic ways of telling the powerful stories of our community," Cadogan said.
Prior to joining GoFundMe, Tariq was the global head of marketing for Airbnb Experiences, where he led adoption efforts for what was then a new vertical for the hospitality giant. He has a B.S in Geography and Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science and has also held marketing leadership roles at Ford, where he was the Chief Brand Officer, and at Apple, Nike, and Burberry.
"I’ve always believed that during times of uncertainty it’s important to revert back to your values," Tariq wrote in a post announcing the move. "Like many people in the madness that was 2020, I really started to think about what was important to me and I knew that whatever I was going to do next, I wanted to help others."
