Vox has found a new Editor-in-Chief, Swati Sharma, to guide the online publication’s growth plan, ending a multi-month search.
Sharma replaces Lauren Williams, who served as Vox’s SVP & Editor-in-Chief but in November 2020 announced plans to step down and launch Capital B, a local and national nonprofit news organization serving Black audiences. Vox is still searching for a new SVP to oversee Vox’s audio, video, business, and creative development teams.
Beginning next month, Sharma will direct Vox’s 90-person newsroom as the website looks to widen its reach to a larger audience and utilize new formats to deliver its content.
In a press release, Sharma called Vox’s work “more vital than ever,” and added “I’m thrilled to join an institution that has strong values and a crucial mission and I’m looking forward to collaborating with the talented team already in place to continue producing work that dissects and illuminates big ideas, challenges long-held perceptions, inspires people to live better lives, and fosters the kind of discussion that leads to real change.”
Prior to stepping into the top editorial spot at Vox, Sharma guided digital coverage at The Atlantic and was a central figure in the record growth of the publication’s audience. Before joining The Atlantic in 2018, Sharma spent over four years at The Washington Post, as Deputy General Assignment Editor and as Foreign and National Security Digital Editor. Before that, she cut her teeth at The Boston Globe, where she coordinated live coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing.
“Throughout her career, Swati has combined a deep respect for great journalism with a profound understanding for audience needs,” said Melissa Bell, the Co-Founder of Vox and Publisher of Vox Media. “I’m so excited to have Swati working with Vox during this incredible moment of change for both us and our audiences. She brings an appreciation of Vox’s distinctive journalistic mission and proven experience leading teams to consistently produce their best work.”
