Zalando's Co-CEO to Leave the Booming Online Fashion Marketplace in 2021

Europe’s largest online fashion and lifestyle marketplace is losing one of its three co-CEOs. Rubin Ritter, who has led Zalando alongside Robert Gentz and David Schneider since 2010, announced that he intends to step away from the company to allow his wife to pursue her career and to spend time with his family.

Ritter, who is under contract until 2023, will work with the Zalando board to arrange his official exit at the company’s annual general meeting in 2021.

Ritter has been the leader in charge of the e-commerce fashion marketplace’s communications and startegy. Once he departs his duties will likely fall on Gentz and Schneider, who will continue to lead Zalando as Co-CEOs.

“After more than 11 amazing years where Zalando has been my priority, I feel that it is time to give my life a new direction.” Ritter said in a company statement. “I want to devote more time to my growing family. My wife and I have agreed that for the coming years, her professional ambitions should take priority. And regarding my own future, I am eager to allow myself time to explore new interests beyond Zalando.”

Ritter joined the company in 2010, two years after it was founded in Berlin by Gentz and Schneider. Under his leadership, the company has blossomed into an e-commerce success story with 14,000 employees and a valuation of more than $23 billion.

”It is impossible to overstate Rubin’s impact on Zalando’s success. We will miss him dearly as a strategic thinker and leader,” Gentz stated.

Cristina Stenbeck, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board, said, “While the Supervisory Board clearly regrets Rubin’s decision, we have the highest respect for the underlying personal motivation and we greatly appreciate his transparency and openness in giving the Board and the Company ample time until his departure to secure the next steps of this management transition.”
