The Hershey Company has made the sudden announcement that it has upped James Turoff to SVP, General Counsel, and Secretary. The appointment fills the chocolate giant’s top legal role following the shock departure of former General Counsel Damien Atkins in December 2020.

Until now Turoff had filled the role on an interim basis as Acting General Counsel. With his promotion, Turoff will officially lead the company's global legal, compliance and ethics, government relations, corporate security, and corporate secretary teams and report directly to Hershey Chairman and CEO Michele Buck.

"James brings depth of experience and has proven how to effectively work and lead across legal disciplines, balancing our enterprise ambitions with sound risk and opportunity management," Buck said in a statement. "He has risen through the legal department here at Hershey and understands the complexities and opportunities within the business."

Turoff has been with the chocolatier for the past seven years and has served as VP, Deputy General Counsel, and Associate General Counsel in the company’s governance, M&A, and commercial divisions. Before Hershey, Turoff served as Assistant General Counsel of Corporate and Securities at Harsco and spent time as the Director of Corporate Governance and Securities at Scotts Miracle-Gro. The University of Virginia law school graduate started his legal career as an Associate at interntional law firm Jones Day.

The Hershey, Pennsylvania-based candy maker's former General Counsel, Damien Atkins officially departed the company on January 31, due to family illness. Earlier this month, he joined Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr as Senior Counsel.
