Away CEO Steph Korey Steps Down Amid Criticism of Fostering Toxic Work Culture

Away, the trendy luggage brand that achieved unicorn status earlier this year with a valuation of $1.4 billion, said that its CEO and co-founder, Steph Korey, is stepping down. This comes just days after a report from The Verge highlighted the company’s toxic workplace culture and criticized Korey’s harsh treatment of employees citing several former company employees who described a culture of intimidation where employees were berated on public Slack channels. One day after the publication of The Verge report, Korey publicly apologized on Twitter saying she was “appalled" by her own behavior and that she would work to improve the culture at the company. Lululemon Athletica’s chief operating officer, Stuart Haselden, will succeed Korey as CEO. Haselden, who will begin as Away’s CEO on January 13, joined Lululemon as chief financial officer in 2015 before becoming COO in May 2017. Previously, he was treasurer and then CFO of J.Crew. Away told The Wall Street Journal that the CEO search had been underway since this spring. Korey will continue to serve as executive chairman of the New York City-based startup. Away co-founder Jen Rubio will remain as president and chief brand officer.
