Genius hires veteran producer to expand into longform content
Genius has hired Joshua Asen as its first Head of TV & Film to expand from digital media into longform content (TV, film, and streaming platforms). Genius was originally founded in 2009 as an online platform for annotating hip-hop lyrics (Rap Genius) but has expanded to original video series, which feature artists, songwriters, producers breaking down their songs. Asen will lead the charge into new platforms where Genius can tell bigger, longer music-centric stories.
“We’re building on the momentum Genius has established with our digital series like VERIFIED and Deconstructed to tell bigger stories about artists and how music pushes culture forward,” said Ben Gross, Genius’s chief strategy officer. “We’re excited to work with Joshua to share them on TV, film, and streaming platforms.”
Asen recently served as Director of Development at Discovery Science Channel (BattleBots, Mythbusters Jr.), and previously led development teams at 11th Street Productions (Teen Mom), Eastern (Love & Hip Hop), and Off the Fence (Generation Cryo). Before his career in television, he worked for JAY-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records and produced the award-winning documentary I Love Hip Hop in Morocco. Asen will be based in Genius’s Brooklyn headquarters and report to the company’s chief strategy officer Ben Gross.
