Bojk Berghuis

Director, Technology at Apton Biosystems

Bojk Berghuis is the current Director of Technology at Apton Biosystems. Previously, they were a postdoctoral scholar and Rubicon Fellow at Stanford University from October 2016 to October 2019. Their work there focused on using microfluidics to perform genomic screening of complex microbial communities (mini-metagenomics). Bojk also developed and optimized a home-built metagenome assembly pipeline and methods to accurately assemble genomes from the metagenome using machine learning (feature selection, feature optimization, PCA, dimensional reduction, (un)supervised clustering). Bojk then performed genome-centric metabolic pathway analysis to discover evolutionarily divergent pathways in novel species.

Before their time at Stanford, Bojk was a postdoctoral researcher at TU Delft from September 2011 to August 2016. There they did quantitative analysis of DNA curtains data. Bojk was also a consultant at YSE from April 2011 to August 2011, and an intern at Akzo Nobel Chemicals from February 2010 to August 2010. Additionally, Bojk was a visiting academic at The Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford from August 2009 to January 2010, and a student at Laboratory of Biophysics, Wageningen University from September 2008 to February 2009.

Bojk Berghuis has a M. Sc in Molecular Life Sciences from Wageningen University & Research (cum laude), a B.Sc in Molecular Life Sciences from Wageningen University & Research, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D., cum laude) in Single-Molecule Biophysics from Delft University of Technology. Bojk also has certification from Coursera in Deep Learning Specialization, Sequence Models, Convolutional Neural Networks, Machine Learning for Trading, Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter tuning, Regularization and Optimization, Structuring Machine Learning Projects, and Neural Networks and Deep Learning.

Bojk Berghuis reports to Bryan Staker, Founder & CTO. Some of their coworkers include Jim Jahncke - VP, Engineering, Patrick Quintanilla - Manufacturing Engineer, and Windsor Owens - Director, Hardware.
