Michael Gottlieb is the President & General Counsel at Ballast Research. Prior to this, they served as the Managing Associate, Supreme Court and Appellate Practice; Public Policy/Government Affairs at Orrick, LLP from January 2011 to December 2013. In this role, they briefed and litigated petitions and matters before the United States Supreme Court. From January 2008 to December 2011, they were an Associate, Supreme Court and Appellate Practice at Kellogg Huber, PLLC.
In January 2013, Gottlieb joined The White House as Associate Counsel to the President and Special Assistant to the President of the United States. In this role, they advised the President and senior staff on legal and policy issues related to the Departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security, and Transportation; USAID; NASA; National Security; Critical Infrastructure; Privacy; LGBT/Civil Rights. Michael also managed interagency review and implementation of Executive directives, including in response to judicial orders. Finally, they liaised with federal agencies and the Department of Justice to ensure coordination across the Executive Branch.
Gottlieb is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Yale College.
Michael Gottlieb has a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Yale Law School, a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Management and Administration from The Johns Hopkins University, a Master of Science (MSc) with Distinction in Law and Psychology from the University of London, a Master's Degree with Distinction in Linguistics from Yale University, and a Bachelor's Degree with Distinction in Psychology and Linguistics from Yale University. Michael also attended the Town School for Boys and San Francisco University High School.
