Joey Cheong

Joey Cheong is a software engineer who is currently working at Check. Prior to Check, Joey worked at Stripe from February 2019 to March 2021. While at Stripe, Joey was responsible for driving regional expansion to increase Stripe’s user base and country coverage. In particular, Joey accelerated Stripe’s growth in Brazil, progressing from a legacy private beta to soft public availability, leading to 3x increases in user accounts and payments volume while achieving compliance with complex local regulations.

During their time at Stripe, Joey also increased engineering rigor and product quality at the company level. Joey introduced an extensible test suite that was used by multiple teams for ≥13 payment methods. Joey was also recognized for their high quality code reviews and selected for the first batch of code approvers. In addition, Joey contributed to team building and company culture by founding a 100-person community and onboarding 4 engineers.

Joey Cheong completed their Bachelor of Computing (Honours) in Computer Science at the National University of Singapore. Joey then attended The University of Edinburgh for their postgraduate studies. Lastly, they studied at Hwa Chong Institution.
