Matthew McLaughlin

Ward 1 City Councilor

Matthew McLaughlin is an experienced public official and veteran advocate with a strong background in political and community engagement. Currently serving as a Veterans Program Specialist at the U.S. Department of Labor since August 2021, McLaughlin oversees homeless veterans employment grants for the Northeast, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, while also investigating employment discrimination claims. Additionally, McLaughlin has held the position of Ward 1 City Councilor in Somerville since January 2014, focusing on constituent services, budget oversight, and zoning matters. Previous roles include Aide to the City Council in Cambridge, Communications Manager for NASW-MA Chapter, Campaign Manager for Pat Jehlen's re-election campaign, and Outreach Director for Mike Connolly's city council campaign. McLaughlin's early career includes serving as a Veterans Resource Specialist at Project Place and as a Public Affairs Specialist in the U.S. Army during the Iraq War. McLaughlin holds a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Government from Tufts University.
