Garrett Smith

Garrett Smith is an experienced professional in nuclear safety and regulatory compliance, currently serving as the Director of the Office of Nuclear Safety at the U.S. Department of Energy since February 2009. In this role, Garrett Smith establishes nuclear safety policy requirements to protect workers, the public, and the environment from hazards associated with nuclear operations. Prior to this position, Garrett Smith held the role of Director in the Office of Nuclear Safety Basis and Facility Design, focusing on the analysis and design requirements of nuclear facilities. Earlier experience includes serving as a Senior Investigator for Price Anderson Enforcement and as Safety and Licensing Manager at the National Nuclear Security Administration, where regulatory expertise was provided for the licensing of the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility. Garrett Smith began a career in nuclear engineering as an Engineer at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission after earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University at Buffalo.
