Alex Mitchell is currently the Director of Bioinformatics at Eagle Genomics. Prior to this, they were the Coordinator for the MGnify microbiome analysis resource & InterPro protein family database at the European Bioinformatics Institute | EMBL-EBI from January 2011 to May 2020. In this role, they were responsible for overseeing taxonomic and functional analysis of genomic and metagenomic data sets and dissemination of the analysis results. Alex also oversaw database annotation, ensuring biological accuracy and standards compliance. Additionally, they were responsible for identifying and adopting new technologies to improve the analysis of sequence data, as well as for designing the pipeline that underlies MGnify.

MGnify is a world-class bioinformatics research resource with thousands of scientific users. The pipeline that Alex designed has been used to analyse over 400,000 samples from a range of different environments (biomes) - making it one of the world’s largest repositories of microbiome data. In addition to their role at the European Bioinformatics Institute | EMBL-EBI, Alex has also coordinated group’s research activities and industrial collaborations. Alex has been involved in a wide variety of research areas, from bioprospecting for novel enzymes to metagenome-assembled genome recovery and analysis.

Alex Mitchell has a D.Phil. in Neuropharmacology from the University of Oxford and a Bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience from The University of Sheffield.
