Michelle Boyd

Assistant Superintendent, Region 6 at Fairfax County Public Schools

Michelle Boyd joined Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in September 2020 as assistant superintendent of the Special Services Department. The Department of Special Services provides instructional, psychological, social, and related services to meet the unique needs of identified students and their families.

Boyd joined FCPS from the Piedmont Regional Education Program (PREP) in Charlottesville, VA where she served as executive director. At PREP, Boyd was responsible for all aspects of the regional special education program, which provided support services to students with disabilities in nine public school divisions in western Virginia and a school for K-12 students with emotional disabilities. Among her accomplishments are expanding virtual learning opportunities for high school students and enhancing human resource practices to ensure equity in employee acquisition and retention. From 2007 to 2018, Boyd served in several positions with Richmond Public Schools, including assistant superintendent, responsible for supervising alternative education, exceptional education, Section 504, health services, social work services, psychological services, homebased and homebound instruction, student discipline, multi-tiered systems of support, homeless education, family and community engagement, and alternative education; executive director of exceptional education and student services; director of exceptional education and student services; and coordinator, secondary instruction-exceptional education.

Her experience includes serving as a special education teacher in the Virginia Department of Correctional Education, in Henrico County Public Schools, and in Montgomery County (Md.) Public Schools.
