Rebecca Baenig

Assistant Superintendent, Region 5 at Fairfax County Public Schools

Rebecca Baenig is the Assistant Superintendent for Region 5 serving the Chantilly, Fairfax, Westfield, and Woodson pyramids. Appointed to the position in 2018, Baenig serves as an instructional leader working collaboratively with administrators, educators, students, and communities to improve educational practices and produce globally-competitive graduates. Previously, she served as executive principal for Region 5 and principal of Cunningham Park Elementary for seven years and was trained as a turnaround principal at the University of Virginia Darden School Of Business. As a career elementary educator, Baenig has served as a teacher and assistant principal in schools across the division with varied demographics, programs, strengths, and needs.

A strong believer in the power of professional learning communities (PLCs) as a catalyst for ongoing improvement and innovation in education, Baenig has served as a national presenter on the topic. Her expertise is in building collective capacity for school improvement, planning and facilitating job-embedded professional development, and implementing a tiered system of support to ensure the success of all students.

Baenig earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont and a master of arts degree in educational leadership and administration from George Washington University. She has been recognized for her leadership as a finalist for the Nancy Sprague Outstanding First Year Principal of the Year Award.
