The Senior Packaging Engineer will be responsible for leading the design and development of all packaging from concept to commercialization, across growth (new products, new channels/markets), quality improvement and material sourcing initiatives. The Senior Packaging Engineer will work closely with operations, commercialization, marketing, innovation, food safety, quality, and procurement teams to identify key opportunities to meet consumer and business needs, ensure Freshly is bringing the best consumer experiences to life and ensure operational efficiency and scalability.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead package development (primary, secondary & shipment/transportation) and changes across existing products (improvements in quality, productivity, sustainability) and innovation/growth (new products, new categories, new markets).
  • Contribute to the packaging “pod” to drive cross-functional collaboration and coordination across internal teams (operations, logistics, marketing, food safety, etc.) and ensure delivery against key objectives and results.
  • Translate insights and business needs into packaging opportunities that will improve the consumer experience and elevate the Freshly brand.
  • Conduct feasibility analysis on designs, manufacturability, costing and time-to-market. Create development prototypes, engineering drawings, and draft specifications.
  • Create and manage best practices, standard operating procedures, packaging material, and process specifications.
  • Manage assigned packaging initiatives to ensure they meet business needs, inclusive of launch timing, testing, quality, design integrity, and cost.
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal functions, production plants, co-manufacturers / co-packers, and distribution centers.
  • Source and manage vendors, third-party partners and other sources of applicable technologies to identify, test and commercialize new packaging innovations.
  • Manage and attend line trials, and manufacturing startups, as needed.
  • Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies and attend trade shows to help drive innovation in packaging “pod” (structure, materials, form, manufacturing processes, quality).

__About You: __

  • Bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering, packaging science or related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience with packaging development and/or engineering, including knowledge and experience with packaging design, plant operations, processing and packaging equipment
  • Experience with food production and cold supply chain is highly preferred.
  • Clear understanding of the application of a broad range of packaging materials, structural design, printing and manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated design thinking principals and application to the packaging innovation process to deliver new packaging innovation experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of primary, secondary and shipping/transportation packaging types. Experience in thermoforming trays, top sealing film, sleeving, picking & packing is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of relevant regulatory FDA and USDA requirements for packaging.
  • Solid tactical thinking, blending strong analytics, creativity, and curiosity while also having attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving mentality and solutions-oriented approach to your work.
  • Experience in the use of statistical tools for problem-solving.
  • Proficient in the use of G-Suite, CAD (ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks and other) and CAE (SmartCAE or other) applications, CAPE or TOPS.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and make risked based decisions in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.
  • Strong passion to drive innovation in an industry with a lack of precedent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.
