James Babcock is currently the Associate Director at [Gilead Sciences](/org/gilead-sciences). James has over 15 years of experience in the finance and accounting field. Prior to joining [Gilead Sciences](/org/gilead-sciences), they were the Senior Director Finance at Pulse Biosciences, Inc. from January 2019 to December 2020. There, they were responsible for leading the FP&A team supporting all business functions, developing and managing the company financial model, coordinating fund raising activities, helping implement Adaptive Planning and NetSuite, assisting with Auditors and SEC reporting, drafting Audit Committee and Board of Directors presentations, and leading cash management. 

Babcock began their career at Puma Biotechnology, Inc. in January 2017 as the Associate Director of Finance. In this role, they were responsible for contracting from initial term sheets to final agreement execution, implementation, financial management & reporting. James was promoted to Director of Financial Planning and Analysis in January 2015 and held this position until December 2017.

Linda Piiohia-Tanga has worked in the healthcare industry for over 10 years. Linda started their career as a Senior Sales Contracts Analyst at Baxter International Inc. in March 2010. In this role, they were responsible for negotiating and drafting sales contracts for the company. Linda left Baxter in April 2015 to join [Baxalta](/org/baxalta) as a Business Systems Consultant. Linda was with [Baxalta](/org/baxalta) for two years before moving to their current position as Associate Director at [Gilead Sciences](/org/gilead-sciences).

Felicia Khatri is a Manager at Gilead Sciences. Felicia previously worked as a Certified Law Clerk, Narcotics and Gang Units at the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office from June 2011 to November 2011. Andrew has also held positions as General Counsel and Vice President Corporate Development at Myogen Inc from December 2004 to April 2007, and as an Associate at Cooley LLP from May 1999 to December 2002. In 2003, Andrew co-founded Kendall, Dickinson & Koenig LLC, where they served as a partner until December 2004. Christi Shaw is the current CEO of [Kite](/org/kite) at [Gilead Sciences](/org/gilead-sciences). Christi has also served as the US Country Head and President [Novartis](/org/novartis) Pharmaceuticals Corporation (NPC), and as Sr. Vice President & President, Lilly Bio Medicines at Eli Lilly and Company.

Shaw began their career as a caregiver for their sister during their participation in clinical trials from May 2016 to April 2017. Christi then joined eyeforpharma by Reuters Events in May 2016, where they received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In July 2010, Shaw joined [Novartis](/org/novartis) as the US Country Head and President of NPC. Christi held this position until May 2016, when they left to join [Johnson & Johnson](/org/johnson-johnson) Medical as Vice President of Business Development. Shaw stayed with [Johnson & Johnson](/org/johnson-johnson) until October 2007, when they became Vice President, Ethicon, Business Development and Strategic Analytics for the division of [Johnson & Johnson](/org/johnson-johnson). In this role, they were responsible for strategic investments, licensing, acquisitions, contract compliance, and divestitures for Ethicon, Inc's 5 worldwide businesses. Christi also oversaw strategic analytics and insights, including market research, business intelligence, and forecasting.

In April 2017, Shaw was appointed Sr. Vice President & President of Lilly Bio Medicines at Eli Lilly and Company. Christi held this position until August 2019, when they became CEO of [Kite](/org/kite) at [Gilead Sciences](/org/gilead-sciences).

Per Wold-Olsen joined our Board in January 2010, after serving as the Chair of Gilead’s Health Policy Advisory Board since 2007. From 2005 to 2006, he served as President of the Human Health Intercontinental Division of [Merck](/org/merck) & Co., Inc., a global pharmaceutical company. From 1997 until 2005, he served as President of Human Health Europe, Middle East/Africa and Worldwide Human Health Marketing for [Merck](/org/merck). Mr. Wold-Olsen is currently Chairman of the Board of GN Store Nord A/S. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of [Oncopeptides AB](/org/oncopeptides-ab). Mr. Wold-Olsen is Chair of the Board of the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), a non-profit initiative dedicated to the discovery, development and delivery of new medicines for the treatment of malaria.

Dr. Horning joined our Board in January 2020. Dr. Horning was the Chief Medical Officer and Global Head of Product Development of Roche, Inc., until her retirement in 2019. During her 10-year career at Roche and [Genentech](/org/genentech), she helped bring 15 new medicines to patients in disease areas including cancer, multiple sclerosis, influenza and blindness. Prior to her career at Roche, Dr. Horning spent 25 years as a practicing oncologist, investigator and tenured professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she remains a professor of medicine emerita. From 2005 to 2006, she served as President of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Horning was recognized as the 2020 Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association Woman of the Year. She was also selected as the 2017 recipient of the Duane Roth Memorial Award, an honor dedicated to leaders in healthcare, whose work has overcome numerous scientific obstacles to create new paradigms in research and treatment. From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Horning served on the [Foundation Medicine](/org/foundation-medicine) Board of Directors. Kelly A. Kramer joined Gilead’s Board of Directors in August 2016. Ms. Kramer has been Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of [Cisco](/org/cisco) Systems, Inc., a worldwide technology leader, since 2015. Prior to that, she was Senior Vice President of Corporate Finance at [Cisco](/org/cisco). She previously served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of GE Healthcare Systems and Chief Financial Officer of GE Healthcare Biosciences. Ms. Kramer has also worked in GE’s Corporate Headquarters, Transportation Systems and Aerospace divisions. She is a member of the board of directors of the Silicon Valley chapter of City Year, a non-profit organization that provides educational support for at-risk students in high-poverty communities.

Harish Manwani joined our Board in May 2018. Mr. Manwani is a Senior Operating Partner at The Blackstone Group L.P., a leading global alternative asset manager, which he joined in 2015. He previously was Chief Operating Officer of the [Unilever](/org/unilever) Group from 2011 until his retirement in 2014. Mr. Manwani joined [Unilever](/org/unilever) in 1976 as a management trainee in India and held senior management roles around the world, including North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa and Central and Eastern Europe. Mr. Manwani is an honors graduate from Bombay University. He holds a master’s degree in Management Studies, and he attended the Advanced Management Program at [Harvard Business School](/org/harvard-business-school). Mr. Manwani is the Chairman of Board of the [Indian School of Business](/org/indian-school-of-business), and also serves on the board of directors of Whirlpool Corporation, Qualcomm Incorporated, Nielsen Holdings plc., EDBI Pte Ltd. and Tata Sons Private Limited. Jacqueline K. Barton, PhD, joined our Board in January 2018. Dr. Barton is the John G. Kirkwood and Arthur A. Noyes Professor of Chemistry in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the [California Institute of Technology](/org/california-institute-of-technology), where she has been a member of the faculty for nearly 30 years and served as the Norman Davidson Leadership Chair of the division from 2009 to 2019. She is a member of the board of directors of Dow Inc., and previously served on the board of directors and Materials Advisory Committee of DowDupont Inc. and the board of directors of The Dow Chemical Company. Dr. Barton also founded and served on the board of directors of GeneOhm Sciences Inc., a molecular diagnostics company acquired by Becton, Dickinson and Company, and was a member of Gilead’s Scientific Advisory Board from 1989 to 2007. She is a member of the [National Academy of Sciences](/org/national-academy-of-sciences), the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Philosophical Society. In 2011, Dr. Barton received the 2010 National Medal of Science for her discovery of new chemistry of the DNA helix, and in 2015, she received the Priestley Medal, the highest award of the American Chemical Society.

Deborah H. Telman serves as Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and General Counsel, with responsibility for Gilead’s Government Affairs and Policy, Public Affairs, Legal, and Compliance functions.

Deb joined Gilead in 2022 and prior to her current role, she served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Organon, a women’s healthcare company, building out the Legal, Ethics and Compliance, and Environmental Health and Safety organizations following the company’s separation from Merck.

Over the course of her more than 25-year career, Deb has provided legal counsel both in an in-house capacity and in private practice, including experience in global mergers and acquisitions, governance and litigation. She received her Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Deb is a member of the Board of Directors of AtriCure, Inc., a medical tech company focused on the treatment of atrial fibrillation and related conditions, as well as a Board Member of City Colleges of Chicago and Chicago Humanities Festival.

Stacey Ma, PhD, serves as Executive Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing, with responsibility for all the company’s investigational compounds and marketed products.

Stacey joined Gilead in 2022 after more than two decades in the biopharmaceutical industry. Prior to Gilead, she served as Executive Vice President of Technical Operations at Sana Biotechnology and as Global Head of Innovation, Manufacturing Science and Technology at Genentech/Roche.

She has a PhD in chemical engineering from Yale University and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering from Yale and the University of Minnesota, respectively.

Stacey currently serves on the Board of Directors for Atreca, Inc., a biotechnology company.

Merdad Parsey, MD, PhD is Gilead’s Chief Medical Officer, responsible for overseeing the company’s global clinical development and medical affairs organizations. In his role, Merdad supervises all clinical trials and development operations. Together with the leadership team, he works to advance clinical development strategies and programs with the goal of changing the trajectory of disease, and transforming care for the patients of today and tomorrow.

Merdad joined Gilead in 2019, after serving as Senior Vice President of Early Clinical Development at Genentech, where he led clinical development for areas including inflammation, oncology and infectious diseases. Prior to Genentech, Merdad served as President and CEO of 3-V Biosciences (now Sagimet BioSciences), held development roles at Sepracor, Regeneron and Merck and was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Critical Care Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine.

He completed his MD and PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, his residency in Internal Medicine at Stanford University and his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado.

Merdad Parsey

Johanna Mercier serves as Gilead's Chief Commercial Officer, with responsibility for the global commercialization of all the company's medicines throughout the product lifecycle. Under her leadership, Gilead works to ensure that patients around the world have access to the company's transformational medicines.

Johanna joined Gilead in 2019 after 25 years at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where she served in a number of executive leadership positions, gaining broad experience across geographies and in all aspects of the commercial business. In her time there, she successfully evolved the culture and drove strong commercial execution with double-digit growth and multiple launches that changed the standard of care in melanoma and renal cancers.

Johanna holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Montreal and an MBA from Concordia University.

She currently serves on the board of directors of Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. and the University of Southern California's Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics.

Jyoti Mehra, Gilead's Executive Vice President of Human Resources, is responsible for leading people strategy and, together with the Gilead Leadership Team, building an inclusive and collaborative culture. In her role, she has responsibility for elevating team performance and developing a cohesive approach to attracting, developing and retaining employees.

Jyoti brings extensive experience in business partnership and organizational design to her current position. Prior to joining Gilead in 2017, Jyoti held senior leadership positions with Novartis Corp. in the United States, Europe and China, bringing a broad international perspective to her work.

Jyoti received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Delhi University and her master’s degree in international studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

She currently serves on the board of directors of Lam Research and California Conference for Women.

Flavius Martin is the Executive Vice President of Research at Gilead, overseeing the company’s innovative research and preclinical programs across all therapeutic areas. His organization is responsible for internal discovery research and for identifying important external opportunities for Gilead.

Flavius joined Gilead in 2021, after nearly 20 years in the biopharmaceutical industry. Immediately prior to Gilead, he served as Vice President, Research Biology at Amgen, leading Oncology, Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Research. He was also the site head for Amgen South San Francisco. Prior to Amgen, he worked as a scientist and leader at Genentech. 

Flavius received his MD degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara, Romania. He completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Division of Developmental and Clinical Immunology.

Daniel O'Day joined Gilead Sciences in March 2019 as Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer.

Prior to Gilead, Daniel served as the Chief Executive Officer of Roche Pharmaceuticals. His career at Roche spanned more than three decades, during which he held a number of executive positions in the company's pharmaceutical and diagnostics divisions in North America, Europe and Asia. He served as a member of Roche's Corporate Executive Committee, as well as on a number of public and private boards, including Genentech, Flatiron Health and Foundation Medicine.

Dr. Bluestone joined our Board in December 2020. Since 2019, Dr. Bluestone has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sonoma Biotherapeutics, Inc. From 2015 to 2019, he led the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy as President and Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Bluestone is the A.W. and Mary Margaret Clausen Distinguished Professor in the Diabetes Center at University of California San Francisco, where he has been a member of the faculty and served in various other roles for nearly 20 years, including the Director of the Hormone Research Institute from 2000 to 2019. He is an international leader in the field of immunotherapy and has published more than 500 papers over nearly four decades focused on understanding the basic processes that control T-cell activation and immune tolerance in autoimmunity, organ transplantation and cancer. His research has led to the development of multiple immunotherapies, including the first medicine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) targeting T-cell co-stimulation to treat autoimmunity and the first FDA-approved checkpoint inhibitor for the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Dr. Bluestone was the founding director of the Immune Tolerance Network, the largest National Institutes of Health-funded multicenter clinical immunology research program, testing novel immunotherapies in transplantation, autoimmunity and asthma/allergy. He served as a member of the Blue Ribbon Panel, appointed by then Vice President Joe Biden, to guide the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative. Dr. Bluestone is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, and previously served as the Ludwig Professor and Director of the Ben May Institute at the University of Chicago. Since 2019, he has served as a member of the board of directors of Provention Bio, Inc.

Kevin E. Lofton joined our Board in 2009 and was appointed Lead Independent Director in May 2020. Mr. Lofton is the Chief Executive Officer of Common Spirit Health (CSH), a system of hospitals and other care centers in 21 states that resulted from the merger of Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) and [Dignity Health](/org/dignity-health). Mr. Lofton plans to retire from this role on June 30, 2020. Prior to leading CSH, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of CHI from 2003 to 2019. Mr. Lofton also served as Chief Executive Officer of two university hospitals, the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham and Howard University Hospital. In 2014, he received an honorary Doctor of Humanities in Medicine degree from the Baylor College of Medicine and the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s Richard L. Clarke Board of Directors Award. He is recognized for his extensive work in the area of heath care management, eliminating health disparities and creating healthier communities. Mr. Lofton was the chairman of the [American Hospital Association](/org/american-hospital-association-inc) in 2007. He also serves on the board of directors of Rite Aid Corporation.

Mr. Rodriguez joined our Board in June 2020. Since 2019, Mr. Rodriguez has been the Chief Executive Officer of DaVita Inc., a Fortune 500 company providing healthcare services to kidney disease patients throughout the United States and internationally. DaVita strives to improve patients’ quality of life through clinical innovation and integrated, personalized care. From 2014 to 2019, he was the CEO of DaVita Kidney Care, the company’s business unit that treats patients with kidney failure and end-stage renal disease. Mr. Rodriguez has spent more than 20 years in various executive roles at DaVita, driving the company’s transformation for how kidney care is delivered. In 2019, Mr. Rodriguez was ranked No. 40 on the Modern Healthcare list of 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare and in 2015 was named one of the Top 10 Leaders by Hispanic Executive magazine. He currently serves as a member of the boards of directors of DaVita and the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Welters joined our Board in October 2020. He served as Senior Adviser to the Office of the CEO of UnitedHealth Group (UHG) until 2016. He previously was Executive Vice President and a Member of the Office of the CEO from November 2006 until April 2014, and prior to that appointment led UHG's Public and Senior Markets Group. Mr. Welters joined UHG in June 2002 upon its acquisition of AmeriChoice, a healthcare company he founded in 1989. He currently serves on the public boards of Loews Corporation and the Carlyle Group. He is the Executive Chairman of the BlackIvy Group, an organization focused on building and growing commercial enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa; Chairman of Somatus, Inc., a value-based care company; and a member of the Board of Directors for Parachute Health, a healthcare technology platform company for clinicians, insurance companies and medical supply distributors. Mr. Welters is also Trustee Emeritus of the Morehouse School of Medicine Board of Trustees, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of New York University School of Law, as well as Vice Chairman of the Board of New York University and a Trustee of NYU Langone Medical Center. In 2012, President Obama appointed Mr. Welters to the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He is also a founding member of the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
