James Waller is an experienced fermentation scientist and engineer with a robust background in optimizing and scaling fermentation processes. Currently serving as the Fermentation Team Lead and Senior Engineer 3 at Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. since October 2022, James oversees and mentors a research team. Prior roles include significant positions at Bayer Crop Science from October 2015 to October 2022, where James held titles from Principal Fermentation Scientist to Fermentation Scientist II, focusing on the development and scale-up of fermentation processes. Before that, James was the Fermentation Group Leader at Marrone Bio Innovations from September 2009 to September 2015, managing a team centered on fermentation optimization and technology transfer. Academic credentials include a Master’s Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Bachelor's Degree in Biological/Biosystems Engineering, both from the University of California, Davis.
