Andy D.

Senior Product Manager - Data Science at Gro Intelligence

Andy D. has a diverse work experience spanning various roles and industries. Andy started their career as a Lifeguard at the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission in 2008. Andy then worked as a Hollings Intern at NOAA, where they designed and executed a study on fish growth and health.

Andy went on to work as a Farm Management Trainee at Taylor Shellfish Company Inc. and as a Laboratory Technician at the University of Washington, where they fed and maintained tanks of zebrafish and assessed water quality for aquaculture systems.

In 2010, Andy joined the University of Washington as a Field Technician, conducting assessments of food webs in lakes. Andy also worked as an Undergraduate Student Researcher, formulating a novel finfish diet and conducting a growth trial with juvenile sablefish.

After their undergraduate studies, Andy joined the University of California, Davis as a Graduate Student Researcher, investigating system design solutions for land-based macroalgae culture systems. Andy constructed mathematical models and conducted field experiments.

Andy then moved into the industry, joining Aquacare Environment Inc as a Project Manager. Andy managed multiple recirculating aquaculture system projects, handled design services and equipment sales, and contributed to customer service, marketing, and sales.

In 2018, Andy joined UMITRON, an AI and IoT startup, as a Product Manager. Andy worked on building software and hardware for fish, shellfish, and seaweed farmers, specializing in fish appetite detection and ocean satellite data monitoring.

As a Founder, Andy started and operated FarmFish.org, a platform that publishes information on land-based aquaculture systems. Their first publication, "Recirculating Aquaculture Systems: A Guide to Farm Design and Operations," has customers in over 65 countries.

Most recently, Andy joined Gro Intelligence in 2021 as a Product Manager. Overall, their work experience demonstrates a strong background in aquaculture, including project management, research, product development, and entrepreneurship.

Andy D. completed a Master of Science - MS degree in Biological Systems Engineering from the University of California, Davis from 2012 to 2014. Prior to that, in 2012, Andy attended Bellevue College, where no degree was specified, but studied engineering. In the earlier years, from 2008 to 2011, Andy completed a Bachelor of Science - BS degree with Honors in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington.
