Brent Smart is Chief Marketing Officer of IAG, the Australian insurance giant with leading brands including NRMA and CGU. When Brent joined in 2017, NRMA Insurance was ranked the 36th strongest brand in Australia (by Brand Finance). Now, it is the third strongest brand in the country and strongest insurance brand in the world. This brand strength has translated to commercial success that has seen NRMA Insurance win 3 coveted Gold Effies in the last 2 years.

Previously, Brent spent 20 years in the advertising business, rising to CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi New York and leading the New Zealand Agency of the Decade, Colenso BBDO.
Originally from Melbourne which explains his love of Aussie Rules footy, Brent lives in Bondi with his wife and 3 sons who don’t love Aussie Rules footy quite as much.

Brent Smart

Tim Plant began their career in the insurance industry in Australia before moving to icare NSW, where they served as Group Executive, Insurance for NSW. In this role, they were responsible for administering a number of managed fund schemes serving 10 NSW government departments, 193 agencies and their employees. Tim then moved to Zurich Financial Services Australia, where they served as Chief Executive Officer, General Insurance (Australia & New Zealand). In 2018, they joined IAG as Chief Insurance and Strategy Officer & Acting Group Chief Risk Officer.

They work with Amanda Whiting - CEO, IAG New Zealand, Brent Smart - Chief Marketing Officer, and Jarrod Hill - Group Executive, Intermediated Insurance Australia. Tim Plant reports to Nick Hawkins, Managing Director and CEO.

Tim Plant

Peter Taylor has over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, with a focus on risk management. Peter is currently the Group Chief Risk Officer at IAG, and was previously the General Manager of Enterprise Risk at Westpac Group. Peter has also held the position of Executive General Manager Operational Risk and CRO Support Units at Commonwealth Bank.

In their role as Group Chief Risk Officer, Peter is responsible for overseeing the risk management function across all of IAG’s businesses. This includes identifying, assessing and managing risks that could potentially impact IAG’s ability to achieve its strategic objectives.

Prior to joining IAG, Peter spent 12 years at Commonwealth Bank in various senior risk management roles, including Head of Risk & Compliance and Executive General Manager Operational Risk and CRO Support Units. In these roles, they were responsible for designing, implementing and managing the operational risk framework across the CBA Group.

 Peter has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales and is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA).

Peter Taylor was educated at St Georges College, Harare, Zimbabwe before moving to Australia to study for a B. Commerce at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Peter later obtained a Graduate Diploma in Company Direction from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Peter Taylor

Neil leads the Technology & Operations team, combining IAG’s capability in digital, data, technology, operations and program execution, to deliver on the corporate strategy.

Working across the Group, Neil is responsible for the strategic change agenda, enabling the customer, colleague and partner experience of the future. Through delivering at scale, trans-Tasman, this team drives simplification, efficiency and operational resilience.

Neil joined IAG in February 2018, in the newly-created role of Group Executive Technology, responsible for implementing IAG’s technology strategy across the company. This team was accountable for integrating Technology across Australia and New Zealand, creating opportunities to invest in industry and technical capability and moving to more contemporary delivery methods.

Before joining IAG, Neil worked at PwC and [Accenture](/org/accenture). As a PwC Partner, Neil led the firm’s Technology Strategy business in Australia; he spent over 10 years at [Accenture](/org/accenture), leading an industry team across the Asia-Pacific region to deliver technology and business-led transformations.

Neil Morgan

Julie was formerly Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer and Group Executive Intermediated Insurance Australia (Acting) and she has served as IAG’s Chief Customer Officer.

In her Strategy & Innovation and Customer roles, Julie helped IAG reimagine the experiences it can provide to customers, and her new role will enable her to further realise this potential in the Direct Insurance business.

In Strategy & Innovation, Julie combined strategy with customer governance, chief underwriting office, data, artificial intelligence, innovation and venturing. Her focus was on building new growth pathways and developing future capabilities across Australia and New Zealand. In Customer Labs, she was responsible for improving customer experiences and driving product, pricing, marketing, and digital innovation using data and analytics.

Julie joined IAG in 2005. She has deep insurance expertise, including experience in capital, reinsurance, underwriting, risk management and corporate governance. Previous roles in the business include Chief Analytics Officer, responsible for Group Reinsurance and Analytics, and Chief Risk Officer in IAG’s then Direct Insurance business. Earlier in her career, she held senior roles at Gen Re Australia, part of the Berkshire Hathaway Group, as well as with other reinsurance organisations.

Julie is a Director of Gradient Institute, a not-for-profit organisation whose purpose is to progress the research, design, development and adoption of ethical artificial intelligence systems and was previously the Co-Chair for the insurance stream of the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI PSI).

She has a Master of Applied Finance and is a Fellow of ANZIIF.

Julie Batch

George was appointed as a director of IAG in June 2019 and he is a member of our Nomination Committee, People and Remuneration Committee and Risk Committee.

George Savvides

Peter Horton joined IAG as Group General Counsel and Company Secretary in December 2019.

He was previously Executive Manager Legal, Governance and Risk at Transgrid.

Peter’s career has included roles as Group General Counsel and Company Secretary for QBE Insurance Group Limited, Group General Counsel and Company Secretary of Woolworths Limited, General Manager Legal and Company Secretary of WMC Resources Limited and a Corporate Lawyer then Principal Solicitor at BHP Petroleum Pty Limited.

He is also a Non-Executive Director of the not for profit company Business For Development.

​Peter was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for service to corporate law and in house legal by Global Leaders in Law in September 2018. He was the ACLA Australian Corporate Lawyer of the Year in 2002 and his teams were awarded the ACLA Australian Law Award for In-House Legal Department of the Year in 2004 and 2005 (WMC) and 2013 (Woolworths).

Peter Horton

Michelle was appointed as a director of IAG in March 2018 and is a member of the Nomination Committee, the People and Remuneration Committee and the Risk Committee.

Michelle has held a number of senior executive roles, in major Australian companies, including NAB, MLC and Suncorp. She was CIO (Chief Information Officer) for Suncorp, MLC and NAB, as well as Head of Strategy for MLC and Head of Strategy and Marketing for Suncorp. She was also CEO of MLC’s Corporate Superannuation business and Head of their New Zealand Insurance and Wealth Management businesses.

Scott has been a Chief Executive and is a senior leader in the global insurance industry with over 30 years of experience in the sector. He is a shareholder director in state-owned Kiwibank and a former non-executive director for Chubb Insurance in Australia and New Zealand.

Scott was formerly regional CEO for one of the world’s largest insurance brokers, Willis (Towers Watson), for Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to Willis, Scott worked for Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance as Regional CEO for Asia and the Middle East. He has also held senior regional leadership and Chief Executive roles at ACE Insurance and CIGNA in the Asia-Pacific region and South Africa.

Scott Pickering

George is a globally proven insurance CEO, with extensive operational, business and technology experience spanning property, casualty, health, life insurance and asset management. In an extensive career at Allianz, George worked across a large variety of roles and countries and has led countries and regions of scale and formed strategic alliances.

George began his career as chief general manager of Allianz Australia. Before becoming Asia-Pacific CEO of Allianz, George was CEO of Allianz Italy and Allianz Turkey. George is considered one of Allianz’s most technologically oriented and innovatively minded leaders.

George is the former Chair of Allianz Asia Advisory Council and member of the Allianz Australia Group.

He has also served as a director of BIMA and a member of the Financial Centre Advisory Panel (Monetary Authority of Singapore).

George Sartorel

David is a former partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, with more than 40 years’ experience in professional services. He has a deep knowledge and understanding of banking and capital markets, real estate and infrastructure, and is well versed in reporting, regulatory and risk challenges faced by the industry.

David is a Non-Executive Director of the National Australia Bank, where he chairs the Audit Committee, and is a member of its Risk & Compliance Committee. He is also the President of the Australian Museum, Chair of The George Institute for Global Health and a Director of the Opera Australia Capital Fund Limited and Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation.

David is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

David Armstrong

Jarrod Hill assumed the role of Group Executive, Intermediated Insurance Australia on 13 September 2021.

Jarrod was formerly Country President Australia & New Zealand with Chubb Insurance. He is a seasoned insurance executive with 30 years’ industry experience, including a strong background in technical underwriting, combined with distribution and regional management roles.

Previous roles include Head of International Property Business with Chubb based in the UK, as well as senior roles with ACE Group and CIGNA Insurance, both acquired by Chubb. In recent years, Jarrod has led CHUBB Australia and New Zealand post integration, gaining experience in the areas of transformation of operations, culture and technology while achieving significant growth in gross written premium for the combined business.

Amanda became CEO of IAG New Zealand on 1 July 2021.

Until 13 September, she also held the role of Acting Group Executive Intermediated Insurance Australia. Amanda was previously Acting Group Executive Direct Insurance Australia. Prior to her appointment into the acting Direct Insurance role in November 2020, she was Executive General Manager Consumer Distribution in IAG’s Australia Division with responsibility for the distribution of brands including NRMA Insurance, CGU Insurance, SGIO and SGIC across multiple distribution channels.

She joined IAG from iiNet in 2008 and has more than 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry in both general and health insurance, having held senior roles in these industries as well as telecommunications.  

Amanda Whiting

Nick Hawkins became IAG's Managing Director and CEO on 2 November 2020. He previously held the role of Deputy CEO, accountable for the management and performance of IAG’s day-to-day operations. 

Nick previously spent 12 years as IAG’s Chief Financial Officer, responsible for the financial affairs of the company.  Prior to this Nick was the Chief Executive Officer of IAG New Zealand and also held a number of roles within finance and asset management since joining the Group in 2001.

Before joining IAG, Nick was a partner with the international accounting firm [KPMG](/org/kpmg).

Nick is a Fellow of Chartered Accounts of Australia & New Zealand and a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program.



Nick Hawkins

Christine joined IAG in November 2019 as Group Executive, People, Performance & Reputation. In this role, she is responsible for the functions of People & Culture, Corporate Affairs, Safer Communities, the Australian Business Roundtable for Disaster Resilience & Safer Communities and the IAG Foundation. 

Christine has over 25 years of broad industry experience in financial services, professional consulting services and telecommunications. Her career includes extensive international experience working with global teams across multiple regulatory and employment jurisdictions.

She has broad and deep human resources expertise, and has led organisational initiatives including mergers and acquisitions and implementing remuneration frameworks. Christine is also experienced in designing change and capability frameworks and company-wide culture programs.

Before joining IAG, Christine was Executive General Manager Human Resources for the Business and Private Bank and Institutional Banking & Markets divisions of the [Commonwealth Bank of Australia](/org/commonwealth-bank-of-australia). Previous roles include executive human resources positions at [National Australia Bank](/org/national-australia-bank)’s Business Bank division, PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Law Society of Upper Canada and Optus Singtel.

Christine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Masters in Industrial Relations, Strategic HR Management from [Harvard University](/org/harvard). She is continuing studies in neuro-science and positive psychology.

Christine Stasi

Michelle McPherson was appointed as IAG’s CFO on 2 November 2020. In this role, she will lead the team that provides company-wide financial insight; actively manages and optimises IAG’s balance sheet and capital platform; and manages the company’s reinsurance program.

Michelle joined IAG as CFO Australia and was then appointed Acting CFO. She has more than 30 years’ experience, having held finance and chartered accounting roles across a range of industries.

Before joining IAG, Michelle was Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer for the nib holdings limited group (nib). She played a key role in nib’s progress and success for over 17 years and was a Director of nib foundation and a number of subsidiary companies within the nib Group.

Prior to this she held senior roles at Caltex Australia and also worked at BDO Nelson Parkhill.

Michelle is a member of the Council of the University of Newcastle, a Director of Hunter Valley Grammar School and a member of the University of Newcastle advisory boards for the Faculty of Business and Law, and the Hunter Research Foundation Centre.

Tom was appointed as a director of IAG effective 1 January 2015. He is chairman of our Audit Committee and a member of the Nomination Committee and Risk Committee.

Jon was appointed as a director of IAG in September 2015. He is chairman of the People and Remuneration Committee and a member of our Nomination Committee and Risk Committee.

Simon Allen was appointed to the IAG Board on 12 November 2019. He is a member of the Risk Committee and the Nomination Committee.

The executive team of IAG has a wealth of experience in the insurance and risk management industries. The CEO has previously worked as the Worldwide Managing Director at Saatchi & Saatchi New York, and the Managing Director at BBDO San Francisco and Colenso BBDO. The Executive General Manager has Operational Risk and CRO Support Units at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and the Group Executive is Insurance for NSW at icare NSW. Both the CEO and Executive General Manager have degrees in Marketing and Finance & Economics from Monash University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal, respectively.
