About Icebreaker

Icebreaker is a team bonding and community engagement platform for people-focused organizations seeking to build relationships and strengthen teams in an era of disconnection and distraction. Unlike Zoom, Icebreaker is designed for how humans actually connect. We make it simple and effortless to bring people together online in a way that’s both wildly fun and deeply meaningful. We envision a world without isolation, where all people feel a deep sense of belonging.

We believe in creating a truly happy place to work and setting the bar for remote culture. Our founders — a social-change technologist, an activist turned entrepreneur, and a community organizer — are leaders with a track record of success from Change.org, Obama for America, Hustle, the MIT Media Lab, and Facebook.

Our team works remotely, but you will have to be available to work on U.S. Pacific Time–friendly hours, which may be difficult from Europe or Asia.

About the Role

As our first engineering manager, you will report directly to the Chief Product Officer and manage a talented engineering team.

The first 15 hires are a company’s destiny. You’ll build the foundation on top of which the engineering team will continue to grow. You’ll inform the direction of our platform, and shape our company culture for years to come.

Our Dream Candidate

We’re excited to be hiring an Engineering Manager to join our team! Our dream candidate has the following qualities:

  • Experienced Engineering Manager. You have a successful history of structuring and managing a team of excellent engineers — helping to develop their careers with stretch projects and quality feedback, while empowering the team to achieve a high level of technical productivity and quality.
  • All-star engineer. You have proven technical underpinnings and a strong track record building software applications, with an emphasis on complex web applications.
  • Impact-driven product thinker. You will be deeply involved in every aspect of the product development process, from prioritization and scoping to design. You will constantly need to weigh the need to invest in long-term improvements against the urgency of getting features out the door. We’ll rely on your independent judgment to make reasonable choices.
  • Startup mentality. Startups are fast-paced, ever-changing, and uncertain. You will wear many hats. You’ll at least need to be okay with that — and ideally, you’ll embrace it.
  • Belief in our mission. Community should play an active role in your life. You understand our vision and believe in the company’s potential to realize it.

You Will:

  • Manage a skilled team of engineers, empowering them to achieve a high level of technical productivity and quality.
  • Cultivate excellence in the reliability, scalability, security, and craft of the software your team builds.
  • Ensure the professional development and career growth of your team with stretch projects and insightful, timely feedback.
  • Recruit a diverse team of engineers who are among the best in the industry, from outreach through close, in a fast-scaling organization.
  • Partner with founders, product development, and design to define development priorities.
  • At times, dive into the code and ship things yourself.
  • Act with the highest personal integrity and ethics.

You Have:

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with 2+ years of experience in engineering management.
  • Experience managing engineering teams that have built complex web applications.
  • Strong recruiting skills, with a track record of hiring new team members who are extremely effective over the long term.
  • The ability to thrive in a rapidly-growing environment.
  • Experience working with leaders across functions.
  • Passion for building authentic connection in an increasingly disconnected world.
  • Experience with Clojure or LISP languages is a plus. At very least, you should be excited to learn!

What We Offer:

  • Compensation package that includes both salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance benefits plus 401K retirement plan
  • Flexible, remote-first work environment
