Jonathan Eng

Jonathan Eng is a Staff Machine Learning Engineer at Iterable. Jonathan has also worked as a software engineer for Khan Academy and Palantir Technologies, and as a software engineer for IBM (BigFix).

Eng has always been interested in computers and technology. In high school, they took AP Computer Science and loved it. Jonathan went on to study computer science at Stanford University. After graduation, they worked for IBM (BigFix) for a year before interning at Palantir Technologies the summer after their first year out of college. Jonathan then returned to IBM (BigFix) and worked there for another year before interning at Khan Academy.

At Khan Academy, Eng was one of two developers on the internationalization (i18n) team, responsible for bringing Khan Academy to the rest of the world. Jonathan was engaged in iterative collaboration with i18n partners (e.g. Gates Foundation, Lehman Foundation), designers, and product managers.

Jonathan also pioneered the development of the central i18n dashboard which enabled thousands of translators by integrating various i18n data sources (Crowdin, Amara, YouTube) and efficiently directing translation efforts. The dashboard is built on Google App Engine, React, Jinja2, Python. Jonathan introduced various many performance optimizations (e.g. caching, pre-fetching). Eng also developed a YouTube Analytics CSV Export feature (using backend mapreduce and performance caching) to evaluate video quality.

After their internship at Khan Academy, Eng became a Staff Machine Learning Engineer at Iterable. In this role, they are responsible for building and maintaining machine learning models that power Iterable's marketing automation and engagement platform.

Jonathan Eng's educational career includes a Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of California, Berkeley and a BS in Computer Science and Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. Jonathan also attended Washington High School.

They are on a team with Kevin Tham - Staff Site Reliability Engineer, Victor Babenko - Senior Staff Software Engineer, and David Truong - Head of Mobile Engineering. Jonathan Eng reports to Bill Press, SVP, Engineering.
