People love their home outdoors and want it to look great while they go about their lives. Here is how they accomplish this goal today:
- Find businesses. Search and research, over and over again...
- Read reviews. Can I trust them? Does a business really meet my needs?
- Contact providers. Missed phone calls, voicemails, when will they call me back?
- Schedule them. And often reschedule. Bad weather, calendar snafus…
- Hope for the best. Will they really take care of my lawn? Will they overcharge me?
- Pay pro. A lot of times it is cash or a cheque. Oh no...
Painful, unreliable and frustrating. We are here to change that. If you are excited about building a delightful and reliable home outdoor services shopping experience then let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org . No resumes or cover letters needed. Let’s talk! We are also looking for other roles in product: Founding Senior Product Manager, Founding Product Manager and UXD: Founding Principal user experience designer, Founding Senior user experience designer
🚀 The story so far 🚀
We have built something that:
- Is loved by our customers. Hear what they have to say
- Is admired by Google - #1 in SEO.
- Our investors are psyched about
- Generates ~45M in annual revenue with healthy margins.
And we are just getting started. While we have been focussed on lawn mowing, we have huge opportunities in front of us: geography expansion, related services (weeding, mulching, bush trimming, fertilization, landscaping, et.al.) and adjacencies (such as commercial segment - think property managers who look after 100+ properties) to go after. The entire home outdoor services market is 100B+ in the USA alone.
🤔 Problems to be solved 🤔
We have plenty of exciting problems to be solved, such as:
Delighting consumers: We believe delighting consumers and obsessing about solving problems for them is at the heart of why we are on this mission. We have built a product that our consumers love but they expect more. They want on-time service. They want it to be of high quality, always. They want competitive pricing. They want it to be easy to reschedule, pay and add/remove additional services. So as we scale, how do we provide high quality service at great value? How do we identify the right consumer problems to be solved? We have plenty of fun and hard user activation and retention problems to solve.
Keeping providers happy: We believe we cannot succeed if we don’t have the largest number of high quality providers on the platform. Providers who are happy with the value they derive from the platform. We are well on our way given our curated approach to acquiring, onboarding & engaging the small businesses who power the home outdoor services industry. We have managed to build a great customer acquisition platform for our providers. But they expect more. They want us to maximize their earnings while reducing their costs such as driving time (similar to those on mobility and delivery platforms like Uber, Doordash). They want us to identify profitable jobs for them and create a recurring relationship (think supply/demand balance). They are eager for us to take care of their business operations challenges so that they can focus on doing great work for homeowners.
Marketplace challenges: We are a marketplace and have solved a lot of chicken-and-egg problems to seed the marketplace. We have consumers, we have providers and they exchange value on LawnStarter. Awesome! How do we keep the marketplace healthy & growing? How do we balance the needs of various participants as we keep growing? How do we ensure that consumers get outsized value and providers maximize their earnings?
Network effects: The more consumers we have the more we can drive revenue for providers and cut their costs. The more high quality providers we have the more we can keep consumers happy. Our dream is to have high quality pros providing home outdoor services to all the homes in a neighborhood on a single day. Minimize driving time, idle time for pros while maximizing their earning time. Maximize consumer delight by providing on-time, high quality service. Do all this as we continue to scale.
🪞Does this sound like you?🪞
Experience: You have 9+ years of experience in building large scale consumer products and at least a few years of experience building marketplaces.
Education: You have a STEM background or relevant education that makes you suited to solving problems we plan to tackle.
Problem solving approach: You take pride in understanding problems deeply and asking the right questions. You rely on data to inform your gut. You care about having a structured and logical approach to solving ambiguous and poorly defined problems. This is unlikely to be a good fit if your primary skill or interest is in executing/managing the solution building phase (think project management) or engineering solutions (think software engineering)
Communication: You take pride in communicating well. One of the defining responsibilities of a PM at LawnStarter is articulating the problem to be solved. We take pride in written communication. You understand that being a PM often involves saying No but with empathy and reason. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you are someone who is unable to carve time to think deeply about problems and articulate them to your peers.
Consumer focus: You care deeply about understanding the consumer and always keeping a pulse on how their expectations are changing. You also understand that we are not in this to please everyone all the time. You have the ability to identify the cohorts that we should focus on and crystallize what problems we solve for them to drive business growth. You chase long term consumer retention over short term revenue goals. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you don’t have a track record or deep interest in having direct consumer interactions on a consistent basis.
Bias for action: You understand that in spite of the careful approach you take to understanding problems and identifying opportunities, you actively try not to be perfectionist or get yourself tied up in knots. You have a bias for action in order to make progress. You enjoy being scrappy and constraints enthrall you. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you, by default, like building complete and full solutions from the get go.
Pride in self-care: We care about how we achieve our goals, not that we just achieve them. The journey matters. How you treat your peers, the temperament you bring to work on a daily basis matters a lot. But we understand that you cannot bring your best self to work on a consistent basis without a deep commitment to taking care of yourself. We want you to be selfish about carving time for self-care. We will support you in it. This is unlikely to be a good fit if you are not committed to self reflection, identifying areas of personal growth and pursuing it with zeal.
🎁 Benefits 🎁
Supporting self-care - We have unlimited vacation policy and will nudge you to utilize it to care for yourself. We will operate together to ensure you have the support you need.
Supporting career growth - We actively invest in this area by carving a budget for training and skills development you seek.
Healthcare benefits - Medical, dental, vision and 401k (with match)
Skin in the game - We want our product managers to benefit from significant company growth. To that end, equity is a big portion of how we structure compensation for PMs.
Fully remote position - Work remotely from anywhere you want.
