Matobo Hills Lodge sits inside one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth — a place where 3.5 billion years of geological history, ancient human culture, and some of Africa's most remarkable wildlife converge in a single UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The granite formations of Matobo were shaped over three thousand million years ago and carved by erosion into a vast gallery of sculptured rock — castle kopjes, balancing boulders, and labyrinthine gorges stretching across several thousand square kilometres. It is landscape that demands silence.
For tens of thousands of years, the San Bushmen sheltered in these caves and recorded their world on the rock walls. Matobo contains the highest concentration of San Bushman rock art in the world — paintings of extraordinary detail and beauty, many thousands of years old and still vivid in the granite.
The same hills that sheltered the San also drew Cecil Rhodes, who chose to be buried on a hilltop he called World's View. Standing there, it is not hard to understand why.
Matobo's wildlife is no less remarkable. The park holds the world's highest concentration of leopard, significant populations of both black and white rhinoceros — which can be tracked on foot — giraffe, sable, kudu, zebra, wildebeest, and tsessebe. The rocky slopes are home to vervet monkeys, baboons, klipspringer, and rock hyrax. And above it all, Matobo is renowned for the world's greatest concentration of black eagles.
