Exhibiting classic Canadian kindness and a curiosity about all things – she earned her BSc in Neuroscience and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, after all – Rebecca’s fantastic event planning and adorable photos of her pup, Piper, keep everyone at Maze engaged and energized. She’s a consummate advocate for our community and packs an amazingly efficient carry-on bag, both qualities super integral to life at Maze!

Why did you join Maze?

I learned about Maze from a collaboration at my previous organization. When the opportunity came to join the team, I had to accept! What stood out was the level of care that the organization demonstrates for individual team members – from benefits to offsites – and the overall positivity within the team. The folks that make up Maze are a community, not just people filling roles.

What were you doing before joining Maze?

Before joining Maze, I was a program manager at Learners, a Canadian-based startup aimed at providing free and accessible professional development content for folks in user experience. It was a small team (less than 10 people), so I had a diverse set of operational responsibilities. I wore just about every hat, from business ops to community management, and everything in between.

What’s great about living in Toronto?

I absolutely love living in Toronto. It’s the most culturally/ethnically diverse city in the world! In this city, you get to experience so many beautiful global cultures through fabulous food, eye-opening festivals, and more!

How has remote/ distributed work impacted you?

For me, being remote means that I get to travel anywhere, anytime – traveling, exploring new places, being outside of my comfort zone is my happy place. I love visiting other A-Maze-ings wherever I go, and I love that my team is accommodating of working in different time zones. I am enabled to do my best work, unconstrained by standardized (office-based) expectations. By being freed to work any time, I can be heads-down when I’m in a focussed state of mind, go for a midday walk when I need the space to think, and have full control over my calendar (since we are asynchronous-first). This setup has been imperative for my work-life balance.

What have you enjoyed at Maze?

The people I work with make Maze such a special place! I love that we can showcase ourselves in authentic ways through various fun Slack channels, through Snacks N’ Facts, through our work and our Zoom calls. We work hard, and we also have fun. We take time to celebrate wins – big and small – and to also celebrate each other.

What’s something exciting that you’re building?

🪩DISCO CONF🪩 WOOP WOOP 🥳😆 Quite honestly, this project gives me (and others) so much joy, I can’t wait to see it come to life.

What do you value most about your team?

It’s astounding the level of trust and respect that we all have for each other. The marketing team communicates a lot in our channel, very transparently sharing the times when we’ll be reachable, what we’re working on, and reporting on our work. I also love that even though several new team members have recently joined the marketing organization, our amazing dynamic remains unchanged; the collaboration only becomes better!

Humans of Maze: Meet Sadie Deens

A-Maze-ing noun amaz·ing | \ ə-ˈmā-ziŋ \ Definition of A-Maze-ing a team member of Maze one who inspires, educates, shares generously, and cares deeply Welcome to the new Humans of Maze series where we introduce our A-Maze-ings to the world. Dive in to learn more about the incredible, talented, and kind people behind the product you love. ––– Sadie Deens is a ray of sunshine personified on our Talent Support team! A native of the East Coast of the United States, Sadie is an avid fan of American football (📣Go Patriots! 📣) and relishes being close to her extended family and friends. Our Talent Support team wears just about every hat at Maze – from technical support, payroll questions, onboarding, and more – and Sadie balances her work time with plenty of time outdoors and exercising. Looking for Sadie when she’s asynchronous? You can find her at the gym, hanging at the beach, spending time with her nephew, or snuggling with her sweet cat Elsa! Why did you join Maze? It was inevitable; once I met the team, I couldn’t say no! I loved my interview experience. The people I met throughout the process were outstanding, patient, and inspiring. Most importantly, Maze’s culture really struck me and I was excited to be a part of it. What were you doing before joining Maze? Before I joined Maze, I worked with students with disabilities through a high school life skills program. During that time, I was an assistant coach for the Special Olympics, and I spent my time after hours job coaching to assist my students with their work outside of school. What’s great about working for a remote organization? I love working remotely because I can spend quality time helping my family, maximize my outdoor time, and the quality of my work is the focus instead of the quantity of my hours. I live in the state of Connecticut where we have lots of forests, beaches, and cute mom-and-pop coffee shops. I love that I’m able to quickly and easily change my environment based on my mood, and that balance has definitely had a positive impact on my mental health. Instead of worrying about my commute or punching in a time card, I can instead spend time meeting with the greatest people around the world. I have more time to focus on family, make mental health a priority, and invest in growing my skills and learning new things. What have you enjoyed most at Maze? It’s a three-way tie: the culture at Maze is fantastic; the people are amazing; and being a part of this great team, watching everyone come together to reach our goals, is incredibly rewarding. What do you value most about your team? The People team is such a great group. Our transparency and willingness to help one another are so refreshing and energizing. We always work together, laugh together, and cheer each other on. These personalities coming together makes work more exciting, because you feel like you have a group of people always wanting you to succeed and build you up. Help us make an acronym of your name! S: Supportive A: Awesome D: Down to earth I: Imaginative E: Eccentric What is your power ballad/ go to karaoke song? This is hard. Love some Whitney Houston, Def Leppard, but really, anything 80s & 90s.

Humans of Maze: Meet Brittini Odom

A-Maze-ing noun amaz·ing | \ ə-ˈmā-ziŋ \ Definition of A-Maze-ing a team member of Maze one who inspires, educates, shares generously, and cares deeply Welcome to the new Humans of Maze series where we introduce our A-Maze-ings to the world. Dive in to learn more about the incredible, talented, and kind people behind the product you love. ––– Disney-expert and child of the 90s, Brittini Odom (Brit to her friends) is a member of our Customer Support team and an essential voice within Maze, bridging our customers and our A-Maze-ings. Brit is our keeper of crafts, cultivator of culture, and poster of pup pictures, with endless stories about fantastic in-person meetups or silly offsite adventures. If you have a challenge or a curveball to throw her way, Brit will know what to do. Why did you join Maze? The culture at Maze was the very first thing that struck my interest. Regardless of what your position is or where you fall on the totem pole, your voice is heard, valued, and respected. I joined Maze because while this is a company, you feel as if it’s a family. After my first interview, I was completely sold and felt “at home” with not only the position but the people I was lucky to work alongside. What were you doing before joining Maze? Before Maze I was with InVision, first as a Customer Support member and then an IT Support member. What’s great about living in Southern California? I think the question really should be, “what isn’t great about living in Southern California?”! The most obvious down-side of Southern California is how expensive it is. But expenses aside, we have the beach, the desert, the mountains, and really endless outdoor fun! How has remote work impacted you? The ability to work remotely has allowed me to be both a full-time mom and a full-time employee. I am very fortunate that I’m able to have my children home with me every day and not worry about childcare. I’m present for each and every one of their milestones – large and small – and am able to take them to doctor appointments or care for them while sick without needing to take time off. In a nutshell, working remotely empowers me to make connections with people all over the world, help solve support issues, and have Dino Train on in the background nonstop (without it being weird). What have you enjoyed at Maze? This might be cliche or cheesy, but I enjoy everything at Maze! There isn’t a single day that I don’t feel appreciated or valued at this company. Because of the fantastic culture here, you truly understand how your position is helping the company grow, and can see the impact that you make every day. Help us make an acronym of your name!
