Gautam Kumra

Chairman, Asia at McKinsey & Company

Gautam is the chairman of McKinsey’s offices in Asia, including in Australia, India, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Gautam previously served as managing partner for McKinsey’s India offices. Over the past 27 years in the firm, he has worked closely with a diverse range of Indian and global clients, advising them on growth strategy, organization transformation, leadership development, and governance. Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals have been key areas of focus for Gautam but his experience spans all major sectors of the economy including the industrial, financial, and technology sectors.

He has served on McKinsey’s Shareholder’s Council, which is the highest decision-making body of McKinsey and effectively functions as its board of directors, setting strategic direction and policies.

Prior to his appointment as managing partner in India in 2017, Gautam led McKinsey's People & Organizational Performance Practice in Asia and is one of the leading thinkers behind the Firm’s research and insights on transformational change. Passionate about developing CEO leadership, Gautam founded the McKinsey Leadership Institute in December 2013. He is also the founder of the Bower Forum, a unique platform for CEOs and business owners to counsel and learn from fellow leaders. He leads the same in Asia where he has convened sessions of more than 100 CEOs, helping them identify and unlock opportunities for leadership development and personal growth.

Gautam's latest work is MGI's 2021 report, India’s turning point: an economic agenda to spur growth and jobs, which he co-authored with Anu Madgavkar and Shirish Sankhe. The report highlights the actions needed to deal with the challenges of COVID-19 and return the economy to a high-growth path and create gainful jobs for 90 million workers by 2030.

He is passionate about helping institutions become global and world-class organizations. He is a founding board member of the Public Health Foundation of India and also served on its board for a decade. Gautam also serves on the governing board of IIM Bodh Gaya, an autonomous institute of management education, established in 2015 in eastern India. In addition, he is a founding board member of the IIT Delhi Endowment Board and a member of the Global Advisory Council of the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York.
