Millfield School

Dr. Scott Drawer became Director of Sport in September 2018, responsible for all matters relating to sport and its development within the school.

Bringing with him 20 years’ experience of high performance sport in a variety of roles, most recently Scott was Head of the Team Sky Performance Hub, where he brought together some of the elite thinkers in sport to look at new breakthroughs and explore human potential through sport and other creative domains.

Prior to this, Scott spent two years leading a team of technical staff across the player development pathway for [England Rugby](/org/rugby-football-union). Scott started his career within the [Team GB](/org/team-gb) Olympic and Paralympic system, working as Head of Research and Innovation at UK Sport (later [English Institute of Sport](/org/the-english-institute-of-sport-limited)). He developed and led the Research & Innovation programme across five Olympic and Paralympic Games, spanning all aspects of coaching, science, medicine and technology partnerships.

Scott holds a PhD in Injury Risk in Professional Football and an MSc in Sport Science from [Loughborough University](/org/loughborough-university). Scott also has a PGCE in Further Education from [Nottingham Trent University](/org/nottingham-trent-university).

Scott Drawer

Craig Middleton was appointed Assistant Head (Pastoral and Staff) in September 2021 and is responsible for managing the pastoral staffing, housemasters and housemistresses within the school, including the medical centre and counsellors. 

Craig joined Millfield in 2006 and has held leadership roles in academic and pastoral spheres of Millfield throughout this time, ranging from Head of Science to senior housemaster. He previously ran Warner House at Millfield for nine years and has also been working extensively for the last 10 years as a consultant and course tutor for the Boarding Schools Association, a role which he continues to maintain.

Craig holds a BSc Hons in Industrial Chemistry from Liverpool University and previously worked in industry as a research chemist. He also holds a PGCE from York university and is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, [MRSC](/org/mrsc).

Craig Middleton

Alexandra Haydon is the Deputy Head (Academic) and is responsible for all academic matters, ensuring that Millfield is the best place for learning, whether that be for staff or for students. She has been a teacher since 2004, working in state schools in London and South Gloucestershire for 10 years before moving to the independent sector where 2014-2019 she was Head of Science and Senior Teacher at St Mary’s Calne in Wiltshire. With an MSc in Learning and Teaching from [University of Oxford](/org/university-of-oxford), she has published research on promoting students' questions in class and is currently studying for a part-time doctorate in Education at [University of Bath](/org/university-of-bath). In 2019 she was chosen as the winner of the i25, an award which recognizes innovation and influencers in the independent sector.

Alexandra Haydon

Kait Weston became Deputy Head (Pastoral) in September 2018 and is responsible for all matters relating to the pastoral care of pupils, house staff and the boarding programme.

Previously Senior Housemistress at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire for eight years, Kait was responsible for the pastoral, academic and co-curricular life of the girls in her care and played a pivotal role in the introduction of girls to Shrewsbury. Alongside her pastoral role, Kait taught Biology and PSHE. Prior to Shrewsbury School, Kait taught Biology at Thomas Telford City Technology College, Shropshire. She also spent a year as Resident Tutor at Malvern Girls’ College, looking after the pastoral needs of over 80 sixth form boarders.

Kait holds a BSc in Biology from [Cardiff University](/org/cardiff-university), an MSc in Pest Management from [University of Newcastle](/org/university-of-newcastle) and completed her PGCE (Science: Biology) at the [University of Oxford](/org/university-of-oxford). Also a keen sportsperson, Kait was on the winning Oxford women’s team in the 2002 Boat Race, whilst studying for her PGCE.

Kait Weston

James was appointed Deputy Head (Enrolment and Outreach) in December 2021 and oversees student enrolment at Millfield Schools, public benefit, and international campus development. He joined Millfield in 2012 as Registrar and has been responsible for the admissions department and recruitment of students from the UK and overseas. He began his career in 1995 teaching History and Politics at Epsom College, becoming Director of Admissions in 2002. This role was later expanded to include the Marketing Department and establishing of Epsom Malaysia. In 2008 he was appointed Head of Blundell’s School Junior Department (ages 11-13) and a boarding housemaster.

James has a BA in History and a PGCE from the [University of Reading](/org/university-of-reading). In 2005 he was awarded a Winston Churchill Trust Fellowship researching independent and state school partnerships in Australia. He also competes internationally at target rifle shooting and represented England on tour in 2019.

James Postle

Edward James was appointed Head of Sixth Form in January 2020. Previously, he was the Assistant Head of Upper School at Merchant Taylors’ School in Hertfordshire where he was part of the strategic operation in an innovative and high-achieving Sixth Form; he was also Head of Politics at the school.

Prior to this, Edward taught at Pimlico Academy, an outstanding and pioneering state school in Central London, where he worked closely with students who required academic and behavioral support and guidance. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics from Exeter University and a Master of Science degree in Public Policy from [University College London](/org/ucl) (UCL).

Edward James

Gavin Horgan became Headmaster of Millfield in September 2018. Gavin was previously Headmaster of Worksop College in Nottinghamshire since 2012, where he delivered academic turnaround aligned with a substantial building programme and whole school restructure.

Prior to Worksop College, Gavin’s earlier career included working internationally in schools in Sri Lanka and Argentina, before returning to the UK in 2009 as the Deputy Head of The Glasgow Academy, an independent co-educational school with 1300 pupils. Gavin also has extensive experience of the state sector at schools in Hampshire and Lambeth.

Gavin has an MA (Oxon) in Classics from the [University of Oxford](/org/university-of-oxford)

Gavin Horgan

Rob Furlong was appointed Head of Middle School in September 2019. He has responsibility for the overall programme in this area of the school, which includes oversight of the academic, pastoral and co-curricular welfare of the students in Years 10 & 11.

Rob joined Millfield in September 2001, and has previously held positions of responsibility in both the academic and pastoral areas of the school. Immediately prior to becoming Head of Middle School, Rob had been a Head of Year from September 2011.

Rob holds a BSc in Mathematics with Sport Science from [Loughborough University](/org/loughborough-university), an MEd in Mathematics Education from the [University of Exeter](/org/university-of-exeter) and completed his PGCE (Mathematics) at the [University of Bristol](/org/university-of-bristol).

Rob Furlong

Adi Whatling was appointed Assistant Head (Student Welfare & DSL) in September 2021 and is responsible for the strategic leadership pertaining to student welfare and whole school proactive safeguarding culture, as well as management of the boarding programme, the inter-house competition schedule and chairing charity and catering committees.

Adi joined Millfield in 2008 and has held various leadership roles in both academic and pastoral spheres including Head of Department, Housemaster, Acting Assistant Head (Pastoral) and Educational Visits Coordinator; he was Housemaster of Walton House for six years and has been working as a Boarding Schools Association tutor for the last four years. Adi has been teaching since 2000, working in state schools and colleges in Suffolk and Norfolk before moving into the independent sector. He has a MSc in Sports and Exercise Physiology from the University of Essex.

Adi Whatling

Christy Hawksworth joined Millfield in January 2009 as Head of HR. Her previous experience was in Investment Banking within Global firms, where she worked her way to HR Manager. She worked across South Africa, Sydney, Mauritius, London and Dublin on people strategy, partnering the Directors within the Treasury and Equities departments. 

She has B.Soc Sci. Honours in Development Planning and a Post Graduate certificate in Human Resource Management.

Christy Hawksworth

Melissa was appointed as Finance Director in 2018, having previously joined the School as Head of Finance in 2013. Post qualification Melissa moved from practice to industry spending 9 years with a global FTSE 250 Plc in the aerospace & defense sector. Melissa’s role works alongside the Headmaster, supporting his strategic vision to take the school forward successfully. Melissa is also responsible for the effective leadership and management of the majority of support functions of the School. This extends to finance, operations, compliance (including health & safety and data management), the estate (including the building fabric, technology, and environmental impact), catering and commercial activities. Melissa is passionate about Millfield and loves the diverse mix of opportunities available to their students no matter what their background.

Melissa Johnson

Adam Gutteridge was appointed Assistant Head (Academic) in September 2020. He has worked in a wide range of educational settings during the course of his career, lecturing in universities and teaching in schools, rehabs, homeless shelters, and working with vulnerable young people. He joined Millfield from Worksop College where he was Deputy Head Academic, but he has also lived and worked in Ireland, Italy, and the United States.

He has a PhD in Archaeology from the [University of Cambridge](/org/university-of-cambridge) and has worked as a field archaeologist.

Adam Gutteridge

As a former journalist, Liz was shortlisted for the national Young Reporter and Reporter of the Year awards. She went on to work for Devon and Cornwall Police in Corporate Communications and PR. She then moved into Education Marketing in the state sector at [Richard Huish College](/org/richard-huish-college), Taunton, and then in the independent sector at Taunton School. Liz joined Millfield in September 2018. She has a BA Hons in Business with Marketing and is an NCTJ qualified journalist.
