Sophy Lu Barbieri

Senior Vice President and CIO at Northwell Health

Barbieri is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Northwell Health.

Her responsibilities include the strategic direction, talent, information, security, technology and service delivery for the health system’s digital transformation and integrated product innovation.

Northwell’s integrated system encompasses 21 hospitals and 850 ambulatory practices and employs 80,000 people with more than 3,000 solutions at the fingertips of caregivers and administrators at $2.7 billion in community impact. Northwell also has one of the most robust digital information and technology departments in health care.

She earned her B.S in Chemical Engineering from Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. After graduation, Barbieri had the opportunity to design, build and start up a liquefied natural gas plant in Indonesia as a young female chemical engineer. She also designed multiple air separation plants and processes in the industrial gas industry to provide global clean energy. Prior to joining Northwell, she served as an executive in healthcare and global information technology industries for more than 20 years.

Barbieri joined Northwell Health in 2010. In 2017, she was appointed to Vice President and Chief Applications Officer to help deliver the health system's long term strategic vision, digital and technology transformation.

Barbieri became the system CIO in July 2022, which made her the first Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) CIO in a hospital system in the United States.
