David Pendleton

Lay Trustee at Royal College of General Practitioners

Psychologist, organization development consultant, researcher, writer and teacher, David is a Director of Pendleton King Ltd in Bristol. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, an Associate Fellow of Said Business School and Green Templeton College, Oxford. David founded and ran the Edgecumbe Consulting Group from 1995-2015.

Over the past thirty years, he has specialised in developing Leaders, Managers and Professionals individually and in teams. His areas of expertise in healthcare and medical education include effective communication in consultations, a subject on which he has co written five books and for which he won, jointly with Theo Schofield, Peter Havelock and Peter Tate, the 2011 Lynn Payer Award from the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare for outstanding contributions to the literature on the theory, practice and teaching of effective healthcare communication and related skills.

He has focused lately on Leadership on which he has published (jointly with Prof Adrian Furnham of UCL) Leadership: all you need to know, published in 2012 by Palgrave Macmillan (second edition in press 2016).

He is best known in medical education for the eponymous Pendleton rules for giving feedback and laments how wrongly they have been interpreted for the last 25 years! He is also known for his interactive style of facilitating meetings for healthcare and other professionals.
