Pierre Messulam

Director, Risks, Safety & Security at SNCF

Pierre Messulam is a graduate of École Normale Supérieure and a Chief Engineer of Corps des Mines. He holds advanced degrees in mathematics, specializing in probability and systems theory. Mr Messulam joined SNCF in 1989 to create and deploy human factor programmes and a corporate “lessons learned” system. At the same time, he was appointed as an independent member of the standing group on nuclear reactors advising the head of France’s Nuclear Safety Authority, a position he held for ten years.

At SNCF he held operations management positions in every business unit, and in 1998 became head of the South-east Paris region, where he contributed to the successful launch of the TGV Méditerranée line. In October 2001 he took the helm at Ermewa Group’s wagon division, and in September 2004 he became director of the Rhine-Rhone TGV project. He also headed SNCF’s ERTMS programme, leading the SNCF team that managed the ERTMS transition for Thalys and the Perpignan-Figueras project. In December 2010, he became head of Regulatory Strategy and Innovation, and in 2014 he joined Transilien as Deputy CEO for Innovation, Strategy, Forecasting and the Grand Paris des Transports project.
