Gerrit Kurtz

Gerrit Kurtz serves as a Researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) focusing on the Horn of Africa, specifically Sudan and Ethiopia, since January 2022. Additionally, Gerrit has been a Non-Resident Fellow and Research Associate at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) since October 2012, where responsibilities included organizing a transatlantic civil society event on mass atrocity prevention and conducting research on global norm evolution and the Responsibility to Protect. Prior experience includes a Research Fellow role at the German Council on Foreign Relations, with an emphasis on conflict prevention and diplomacy in Africa, and a Doctoral Candidate position at King's College London, studying field-based diplomats in conflict contexts. Gerrit has also engaged in various research fellowships and scholar positions across multiple organizations. Education encompasses a PhD in War Studies/Peace and Conflict Studies from King's College London, a Master of Arts in International Relations from Freie Universität Berlin, and a Bachelor's degree in Governance and Public Policy from Universität Passau.
