Julian Swearengin

Julian Swearengin is the current General Counsel at The Drone Racing League. Prior to that, they were an Adjunct Professor of Law at New York Law School from September 2010 to September 2014. There, they taught JD and LLM-level courses covering government investigations and securities class actions targeting financial institutions. Julian was highly-rated by students. Before that, they were a Principal - Associate General Counsel at Bessemer Trust from June 2010 to October 2020. There, they supported a privately-held firm with $150 billion of assets under supervision and reported to the group's General Counsel. Julian managed a diverse portfolio of contract, litigation, privacy, employment, governance, regulatory compliance, Code of Ethics and policy matters for a bank holding company whose subsidiaries include state, national, and off-shore banks and trust companies, a limited-purpose broker-dealer, and a registered investment advisor. Areas of expertise and responsibility included acting as the group’s chief litigation counsel, acting as the group’s privacy officer with oversight of the firm's privacy policy and practices and data breach response, administration of the firm's Code of Ethics, oversight of the policies and procedures governance process, serving as group records custodian, managing the firm's relationships with outside counsel, serving as a member of the firm's operational risk group, and assisting the compliance team with respect to ongoing oversight and regulatory exams.

Julian Swearengin has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in Economics, Journalism. Julian also has a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School. Julian is certified in Certified Information Privacy Professional/United States from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
