Jerry M. Maniate

Dr. Maniate was appointed as Vice President of Education for The Ottawa Hospital effective November 1, 2017.

Dr. Maniate moved from Toronto where he was a community-­‐based clinician-educator (General Internal Medicine). He is the inaugural Chief of Medical Education, Research & Scholarship, and the Academic Director of the Medical Education Teaching Clinic at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (Toronto). He has previously served as the Assistant Director of Researchers at the Wilson Centre, Chair of the Faculty Council Education Committee and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Maniate has had a long-­‐standing involvement with residency-­‐education starting when he served on the Executive Committee and as President of the Canadian Association of Internes and Residents (now known as Resident Doctors of Canada) and more recently with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in association with its conferences (ICRE and IMELF), various committees and as a member of accreditation survey teams.

Dr. Maniate was a key contributor in a working group in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework in 2015. In reflection of his international educational activities and leadership, in 2016, he was appointed by Royal College International as Regional Director for Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and Associate Regional Director (Faculty Development) for Kuwait.

As an education researcher, Dr. Maniate is currently working in two main, yet intertwining areas of scholarship: 1) exploring the intended and unintended effects of globalization on medical education systems including (but not limited to) accreditation, assessment, governance, curriculum, and health human resources planning; and 2) creating novel models of medical education and research/scholarship.
