Michael Sewell

SVP, Engineering at The RealReal

Michael Sewell is the Senior Vice President of Engineering at The RealReal. Michael has over fifteen years of experience in the engineering field and has led engineering teams at Goodreads and GREE International, Inc.

At Goodreads, Michael led the engineering organization and helped book lovers find their next great book, share their reading experiences with friends, and engage with their favorite authors and influencers. Michael was also responsible for reducing the number of production incidents by 65%, rebuilding the management team, centralizing the team from split locations to San Francisco, upgrading key pieces of the technology stack, and more.

Before Goodreads, Michael was the Sr. Director of Engineering, Strategy Studio at GREE International, Inc where they oversaw the development of all games in the Strategy studio, including backend tech, iOS, Android, and Unity. Michael also managed the development of several pieces of key backend infrastructure company-wide, such as async processing systems and core PHP and Go frameworks. Under their leadership, the team successfully built out infrastructure for European deployment and migrated key services to DynamoDB.

Michael has a proven track record of leading successful engineering teams and delivering results. Michael is an expert in their field and is currently using their skills to help grow The RealReal.

Michael Sewell earned a BS in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Michael Sewell reports to Rati Levesque, Interim Co-CEO. Some direct reports include Jordi Adame - Director of Engineering, Christopher Brossman - VP, ML & Data Engineering. They work with Orr Shakked - Chief Marketing Officer, Frank Zhu - Chief Analytics Officer, and Joseph Ellis - Senior Director of Facilities & Workplace Services.
