Ryan joins the Org!

Ryan joins the Org!

We had our eye on Ryan for a long time. So to say we're thrilled that he is now joining the team is an understatement of our real excitement level that can't be contained on this page. He's come on as our Senior Director of Business Development, focusing on growth through outbound initiatives and partnerships. When we asked Ryan why he was excited about joining The Org he told us: "Everyone on the planet should feel exactly like I do right now when interviewing and then onboarding into a new role. Super excited, running full speed into it, no reservations at all. Knowing prior to starting exactly who you will work with, how the organization is structured, and ensuring values are aligned are impossible without validated transparency. I joined to help make sure this is a reality for everyone, everywhere." Ryan joined his first startup, Zoomer, as employee #2 and was the first executive hire in 2014 as their Head of Sales. He focused on the commercial side of the business growing revenue from zero to $1M+ and then scaled a team to $15M+ within 30 months. He spent the last few years with two startups focused exclusively on health systems within the pharmacy space, helping bring enterprise solutions to that market. "I've sold mature products and MVPs from B2C to mid market to enterprise. I love providing "voice of customer" feedback and working closely with product, tech, and operations teams." Ryan and his wife are blessed with two healthy children. They are young so he spends almost all of his time outside of work with them. He also sneaks away to the golf course now and then. His family recently found a church they are excited about and also spend a good amount of time at the local YMCA where both kids take swim lessons. Ryan grew up outside of Philadelphia and spent most of his years post college living in Philly. After kids, he and his wife moved to where his wife was from to raise them near the lake in Brookfield CT. Ryan, you've arrived. Welcome to The Org!

The Org welcomes Gustav to the team!

The product team is growing and Gustav joins as our newest Product Manager. His responsibilities cover testing ideas and iterating on them to ship features for our users. He is passionate about understanding people and enjoys diving deep into problems. He describes. his approach as: "I strive to look beyond tech and its solutions and start with people and empathy first." Why The Org? "It was the vision of helping organizations be more transparent. All the information you need and care about is available. Everyone is happy to share their work, experience and knowledge. For me, this transparency creates an environment of trust to be yourself and grow professionally and personally." Gustav celebrates our hybrid work environment. He can work from home to focus on deep work or decide to come into our cozy Copenhagen office which he goes on to say "people here are motivated to work at the office because of the social atmosphere, good work environment, and great office space. It's not because they are forced by company policies - now that is how to build a strong culture." Gustav comes from working in product and partnership positions at tech companies. Most recently, he was at Plant Jammer - a food waste app that inspires people to cook delicious meals with what they already have in the fridge. He also worked at the Danish startup YOUANDX - a transparent booking platform for keynote speakers and experts in various industries. Today, he is still part of YOUANDX on their product advisory board. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time in the nature and playing sports. "I enjoy socialising with friends and family, often accompanied by cooking a great dinner." Gustav has come to be passionate for growing his own food (albeit he claims to not be successful at it yet though we are sure you have green thumb potential!). During summer weekends, you'll find him planting seeds and watering sprouts. While he loves to travel, Gustav knows where home is and loves his life in Denmark. He currently lives in Østerbro, Copenhagen, and grew up just 20 minutes north of the city. We are so happy you are here and can't wait for all the fantastic things we will do together! Please welcome our newest team member William!

Please welcome our newest team member William!

In the spirit of "go for it!" William jumped straight in and joined us at our annual offsite in Denmark before he had his first day at The Org. William joins our data team taking on the responsibility for taking raw data that The Org has and turning it into a format that we can actually work with. From this preprocessed data the goal is to create models, for example with machine learning, that can utilize the data and be incorporated into our services and platform. One of the many ways to enrichthe user experience is having a machine learning model give suggestions to our users about companies or give companies suggestions on how to structure their own org charts. When we asked William what made him excited to join The Org he responded:* "I love the social engagement, energy and enthusiasm that everyone at The Org brings to work, it really makes you feel part of something bigger than just work. Besides all the lovely, and really skillful, people I also get to solve interesting and challenging tasks that I think can help improve the core part of The Org’s product. This gives me opportunities to grow and to feel that I contribute with something important. All this put together makes me very excited to work at The Org!"* While working at The Org, William is a student at The Technical University of Denmark studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.. Before this, William studied Software Development at the IT University of Copenhagen. While studying, William worked 5-6 years on the data team at Save the Children Denmark, working as a Software Developer implementing the data infrastructure through C# Web APIs.. He later on pivoted to working with analytics, then changed to database management and finally doing machine learning. When he's not in front of computers, William loves the outdoors and being active.. Some of his recent passions are standup paddle boarding, climbing, roller skating, and hiking."Name any physical activity and I’d be up for it." William says William grew up outside of Roskilde, (yes, like the festival some might know) and now lives with his girlfriend at Østerbro. Welcome to the team!

Kaila Lim takes on Community Management in NYC for The Org 👋

Kaila Lim takes on Community Management in NYC for The Org 👋

We knew instantly when we met Kaila for the first time that she was made for the role of Community Manager at The Org. Kaila is a natural born public speaker and community builder. With a past in sales enablement at hyper growth startups facilitating connection has become aa native skill for her. In her own words: "It’s my job to help create strong connection internally and bring The Org brand to life externally. My official title is Community Manager but I don’t like the word manager because you don’t manage a community - you build it, grow it, nurture it, and make it better." Kaila is particularly excited for 2 of our values here at The Org - she looks forward to being a contrarian and practicing hygge. You can read more about us here. She elaborates: "Humans were intended to commune. We’ve done since our earliest days as hunters and gatherers. I believe in a workplace that comes together not just because we’re on the same payroll but because we genuinely enjoy the unique energy and vibe each of us brings. " During her previous role at Procore, she hosted their monthly Sales All Hands and got on the stage in front of the Revenue Teams as they celebrated milestones and shared targets. At CreatorIQ, she was lucky to wear different hats. One of them being the host of the Weekly Company All Hands. When they went full remote, she channeled her vlogging skills to Zoom style moderating. She lived in Seoul while working New York hours for CreatorIQ (yes, leading All Hands with high energy at 2am KST) and during day time, she volunteered with Seoul Startups which is a diverse community of native and expat entrepreneurs, investors, artists, designers all interested in learning. It felt natural for her to gather them for coffee meetups or weekend morning hikes. It was volunteering for Seoul Startups that affirmed she wanted to make building community more of her life’s work. On her bio page at The Org you will find a couple of fun facts: She can fit everything she own into 2 suitcases She is half Korean, half Native American (Pueblo of Acoma and Navajo) She loves mangoes. The best ones she has eaten were in Mexico and Kenya. Welcome to the team Kaila! In your short time here you have already made an incredible impression. We can’t wait for all the great moments we will create together.

The Org strengthens the Frontend team with Rasmus Pedersen joining 🚀

We could not be prouder of calling Rasmus our new colleague in the Frontend Engineering team! Rasmus strengthens the team with his background from TrackMan, (Danish sports radar company) where he worked with a Polish engineering team to develop a React app that is now used in baseball stadiums across the US, Japan, South Korea and Australia among others. After that Rasmus started working in Plant Jammer (food waste app) that has more than 1m downloads combined on the Google Play store and Apple App store. After a pivot to become a B2B company Rasmus had the responsibility of starting several React frontends on top of the Plant Jammer API, including the main sas tool. "I am exited to work at the org, because I love the scope of the idea, and believe that it will be huge. " Rasmus says Rasmus is yet another colleague with a side gig: Rasmus and some friends are building a reverse market place for foodtrucks. We love good energy and initiative like this and we even ask our candidates during the interviews to tell us about something entrepreneurial they have done. Passion is contagious and the perseverance to carry through and not be all talk is highly treasured at The Org. Rasmus brings another kiddo to the The Org family and as a family man Rasmus enjoys going for walks and good food (both the eating and the cooking portion) :D Welcome to the team, Rasmus. We are so excited to learn from you and create with you!

The Org Is Meeting Up in Denmark to Celebrate Team Culture!

The Org Is Meeting Up in Denmark to Celebrate Team Culture!

Next week the entire The Org team will be all together in Denmark for four days. If we had a company voice mail it would probably say something like: “The Org can’t come to the phone right now. Everyone is busy building stronger social bonds in an 18th century castle”. For four days we are taking all team members away from their regular responsibilities, away from the office and away from daily routines to plan for the future and build a stronger culture. We think it is important to bring not just the finance team or the leadership team but the whole entire team together to build a greater vision for our company’s goals and future growth. But let’s be very honest. While some of the agenda will take shape as professional and personal development workshops, most of the time will be spent doing social activities and giving the team the space and time to have fun together. Inviting everyone to join the Offsite gives us an opportunity to let everyone know how much we value our culture and acknowledge as a company that wanting to drive change and pioneer new standards for work has to come from within and we need to start with ourselves. The culture and performance of a company is a sum of the unique fingerprints of every single team member and taking time to get to know each other better is a great step in the right direction towards figuring out our strengths and in turn understanding how we utilise these to play each other better and grow the company stronger. You might be familiar with the Danish term “hygge”. Being a partly Danish company this is a term we’ve embedded deeply into our culture and values. We believe that people perform better and personally unfold when colleagues become friends and as team members find more security in their work relations. Blocking almost a full week on the teams calendars to take time to have fun and “hygge” is definitely a testament to how serious we are about our culture. For our 2021 Offsite we were supposed to fly everyone to Preikestolen in Norway but due to complicated travel restrictions around entry into Norway we had to think fast to come up with a PlanB or cancel all together. The latter was actually not an option. Now the trip goes to the very scenic Hvedholm Slot two hours outside of Copenhagen in Denmark. This last minute change taught us a very important lesson; it truly does not matter where in the world we take the team. The venue does not make the Offsite - people make the Offsite and it is an investment in our overall culture that we are more than happy to make and an opportunity we are honoured to be able to offer the team. We will be back at our desks Monday September 27.

The Org Raises $20 Million from Tiger Global to Build the Platform for Work

The Org Raises $20 Million from Tiger Global to Build the Platform for Work

We raised a $20m Series B led by Tiger Global, and we’re excited to share why we raised and what we’re going to do with it. In this round we also had the continued participation of our Series A investors Sequoia, Founders Fund, and Balderton Capital, as well as new faces joining us, including Thursday Ventures, Lars Fjeldsoe-Nielsen, Neeraj Arora, Gavin Baker, and others. Our growth since our Series A has been incredible. This summer, nearly two million professionals used The Org and 5,000 new companies joined. We’ve watched early adopters like Dbt Labs, Contentful, and Deel grow from small startups into newly minted unicorns while hiring and organizing their growing teams using our platform. We’ve monetized. With this new capital we plan to shift into the second phase of The Org’s product, grow our team in New York, Copenhagen, and elsewhere, and 10x new users and adoption once again. What is The Org? The Org is a network of 130,000 public org charts. We are taking the dusty org chart out of the drawer and turning it into an interactive tool for collaboration, adding a professional profile that reflects who you are, what you do, and who you do it with, and connecting all individuals and teams in one transparent network and real time professional map of work. Our vision is to build the platform for work powered by a global network of public org charts. Why? Because we believe that organizational design and team culture are fundamental to company success. Increasingly, employees, candidates, and customers believe this too. We are convinced that workplace transparency is inevitable because it has such an outsized advantage for team alignment, hiring, and customer relationships. Why Now? In 2021, it’s easy to see that work is changing. The real question is what happens next. We know that going to the same office every day is over. The 9-5 workday is retiring. Teams are going remote and companies are going distributed-first. The old way of working assumes that people generally hold one role, have one boss, and work in one place. The professional workforce is rejecting these concepts in favor of more dynamic collaboration between colleagues, with teams in multiple time zones, with diverse cultural backgrounds and different communication styles. Work is barrelling toward a system of distributed and self-organized professionals collaborating with colleagues they choose on the projects they want. Our aging tools for finding job opportunities, aligning teams, and getting to know colleagues were built for a previous reality. We’re building for what’s next. Specifically, here’s what we believe the future has in store: Work is now distributed-first. A distributed future relies on self-organization and maximum information about people and process. Enabled by collaborative software, the world’s best teams are no longer bound by geography. To maximize alignment and team productivity, this high-trust future will require much more readily available information about who is doing what and why. Transparency is the future of work. The remote and fundamentally online character of work combined with the power of social media has given birth to a new standard for organizational transparency. Organizations that build in public attract more customers and better talent. Transparency is now a strategic advantage. Traditional professional signals are less and less relevant. For employers and job-seekers, the critical facts are not surface level or name-brand dependent, but instead rely on underlying signals of real culture, values and accomplishments. We need a new platform to showcase the substantive details about people and teams - where employees can really know each other and the places they work and where talent and customers can get behind the scenes. The Org addresses this transparent, collaborative, and distributed future of work. Individuals present themselves in holistic ways via reimagined professional profiles. Teams are more effective because they utilize the public org chart to understand who does what and with who. Organizations openly showcase their actual work, teams, and culture in unvarnished ways to attract new talent and customers. Almost two decades ago, LinkedIn introduced the concept of the public resume. Shocking at first, it now universally defines how we professionally perceive ourselves and others. We are doing the same with the public org chart. How We’re Deploying This New Capital Over our first two years we successfully built a transparent tool for team structure, a directory of hundreds of thousands of teams, and the building blocks of a professional network. This new capital enables us to unlock the next phase of The Org. We will double the team focusing on product, distribution, and monetization. We will expand our offices and move beyond New York and Copenhagen. We will grow from 30,000 users every day to 300,000. And we will become an indispensable tool that the ten thousand fastest growing startups in the U.S. and internationally use to navigate the hour by hour complexities and relationships of work. In just a few short years, millions of employees across the world’s top companies will use The Org each day. In ten years, hundreds of millions of professionals across industries will look to The Org to understand who does what and why at any given organization across the globe. The Org will be the source of truth and map for all work. To begin to get us there, the majority of our funding will be invested in building a stellar team in Copenhagen and New York City. Our Team Since we raised our Series A in 2020, we’ve established a team of great people excited to take on the challenge of improving how we work online. Some of those people include: Keyan Sarrafzadeh: Head of Analytics. Formerly an Investment Associate and Head of Business Development at The House Fund. Keyan has previously called Bahrain, Dubai, and San Francisco home. Chinue Ellis: Scout Associate. Chinue is a Brooklyn native who has traveled to 16 countries. She is a graduate of the New School and career recruiter passionate about a better experience for both startups and great talent. Thor Olesen: Machine Learning Engineer. Thor is a Brussels native and backend software engineer who spent time at University of Copenhagen and UC Berkeley before joining The Org. Maria Borch Jessen: Head of People and Culture. Maria is an expert of international business and strategic management having studied both for her Masters at Copenhagen Business School. She was a Tech Consultant for EY and Analyst for Danske bank before joining The Org. Heini Zachariassen: Advisor. Heini is the Founder of Vivino, a wine community that provides users with the rating, review, and average price of any wine. Keith Rabois: Board Member. Keith is a general partner at Founders Fund where he has led investments in DoorDash, Affirm, Stripe, Palantir, Airbnb, and more. He previously helped lead companies like PayPal, LinkedIn, and Square. And that’s not to mention the wider team of 50 (which, yes, you can see in full on our public org chart!) between Copenhagen and New York. We’ve come a long way and have many more milestones ahead of us, and are excited for the next steps and for those who want to join us for them! If you’re interested in learning more, check out our current job openings to see how you can contribute to building the new platform for the new world of work. Photo credit: Kenneth Ku Laursen

Hybrid Work Policy at The Org

Hybrid Work Policy at The Org

The last 18 months have been rough. Covid-19 has forced us to change how we interact with friends, family, and co-workers. Facetime has replaced coffee dates, Zoom has replaced travel, and Slack has replaced workplace banter. Most of these changes were initially seen as negative but it has also forced us to rethink commonly held conceptions about how we interact. One of these (mis)conceptions is the need for employees to be at an office from 9 to 5 every weekday. Before Covid-19, employees spent hours commuting every day just to spend 8 hours in an office doing work that just as well could have been done at home. Covid-19 helped us realize that a lot of time could be saved by working from home without the distractions of the office environment. However, some of these “distractions” actually help us form personal relationships with our co-workers and develop better ideas through in-person interactions. This has been lost in the fully remote work environment. Starting September 7th, we want to formalize our remote work policy to reflect what we have learned over the past 18 months. We want to retain the flexibility of working from home while ensuring that people are available for in person meetings when necessary. Practically, that means that all employees should be available to come to the office as much as is needed based on their role and personal preferences. For some that might mean 4-5 days per week but for most that will mean 2-3 days. Everybody should be at the office at least 1 day per week because team meetings, feedback, and social events are best done in person. We will continue to provide flexibility should someone want to work fully remotely for a shorter period of time. We will be designing our office space with a hybrid work policy in mind. We want an office space that encourages people to show up in person rather than requiring them to do so. We believe that our physical space should be a reflection of our culture and our work policies. We will continue to follow local laws/guidelines on vaccination and quarantine requirements so this will vary based on locations. This also means that we are making a conscious decision not to hire fully remote employees. There will probably be exceptions to this rule but it will be treated as an exception based on the unique circumstances. Our work environment is optimized for hybrid and we think it’s difficult to optimize for fully remote employees at the same time. If we need talent in a certain location we will consider if it makes sense to open an office there instead. But being based in the two most amazing cities in the world should take us a long way! The money we don’t spend on rent and desks will be spent on social get-togethers and flights between the offices to create space for connection. This will mean yearly off-sites, summer and winter parties in each office on top of all the good work the people team is doing to keep us connected virtually and in person. Our hybrid work policy will remain in place indefinitely but is continuously up for reevaluation. The future of work is upon us and we’re all learning and adjusting as we go. We believe that regular in-person meetings are important to build a high-performing team but that might change as technology continues to break down barriers. In any case, we remain optimistic about how work is evolving to accommodate more flexible personal lifestyles.

The Org celebrates another internal promotion, as Dom takes on the title of Sales Director 📈

Dom is a joy to be around. His honest no BS approach and deeply caring nature makes him eligible for team member of the month if we had such a trophy 😜. Dom has been with us for almost a year and has already made a difference across multiple teams. He has made a considerable impact on the Scout sales process since joining the team in April. Dom had an immediate impact on the effectiveness of our outbound campaigns, highlighted by the considerable increase in win-rates from email campaigns after he took over the process! It is deeply motivating to see how Dom started as a one-man army and now have established a team that benefits from his sales acumen and natural leadership charisma. We have no doubts that you will take Scout to the next commercial level 📈. "I'm very thankful for the opportunity. The company has supported and encouraged every step of the way and to be in a position to help build the upcoming sales team, and help us grow as a business is a challenge I'm looking forward to". Thank you for your contrarian thoughts and social nature. You truly live our values. We adore you Dom!

We are so proud to have Sean join the team at The Org! 🤩

We are so proud to have Sean join the team at The Org! 🤩

Sean joined us at the happy hour prior to his first day and it was clear that Sean has so many stories to tell. When we interviewed him he was in military uniform in the desert somewhere! Did we catch your attention? Sean joins The Org as a Scout Associate (Technical). This means he will be working with clients to support their journey in finding and hiring individuals with a technical background (usually programming/data science experience). However, if your search is non technical you might still get the pleasure of seeing Sean's big smile as well. "I’m excited to work at the Org because it lets me continue my passion for recruiting, but also my interest in startups. Not just in the sense that I’m working at one, but because I’m also able to work with other startups all the time. It’s a pretty straightforward path to recruit for a major financial institution, but it is an exciting challenge to recruit for the small shops with new and unique ideas." In October 2016, Sean enlisted with the Massachusetts Army National Guard during sophomore year of college at Babson college. He trained at Ft. Meade in D.C. to become an Army Public Affairs Specialist. After graduating college in 2019 and he left for NYC with his girlfriend (now fiancee 💍) to work at Apex Staffing as a technical recruiter. There he learned the ins and outs of the traditional recruiting process, both technical and not. Sean worked with companies of all sizes/industries and candidates with 0.5 years of experience to 35 years. In 2020, he deployed to the middle east as part of SOJTF (Special Operations Joint Task Force). There he worked as a logistician, a public affairs specialist, and even a computer technician. "I’m a huge fan of horror movies and shows, such as the Thing (1982) and the Haunting of Hill House. I’m a big PC gamer (League of Legends & Path of Exile are my vices), but also a lover of board games and Dungeons and Dragons. I also enjoy hanging out with my 2 feline friends, Bartholomew and Beatrice. I love to cook and have been working on my Korean recipes recently (currently working on haemul pajeon)." Sean was born in Missouri and then raised in Miami, Florida. He left for Massachusetts for college and temporarily settled down in Long Island City after graduation. One thing led to another and he eventually found himself a proud owner of a Newarkian home that’s been around since Benjamin Harrison was President. Welcome to the team Sean!

The Org Celebrates the Promotion of Derek Hanley to Director of Business Development

If you dont have a Derek on your team, get one! But you cant have ours. We are so excited to announce that Derek is elevated to Director of Business Development. "Could not have gotten to where I am without the incredible support and camaraderie of the Revenue team. It is really easy to wake up and get to work when you admire the people you work with!" Derek commented Derek was the second member of the Revenue / Scout team, and he played an instrumental part in the design, go-to-market and continued development of Scout. In the early stages of development he utilized his knowledge of the recruitment space to structure the service and since then Derek has functioned as the swiss-army knife of the Scout team, having helped with sales, delivery and operations of Scout. Derek’s promotion is not just an acknowledgement of his previous contributions, but also of the fact that he will now play a leading role in identifying and bringing to market The Org’s next commercial product. Quote from a colleague: "Derek is the reason I dont need to meditate" We adore you!

The Org Releases a New Teams Feature

The Org Releases a New Teams Feature

Now you can feature your teams simply and transparently on The Org. Your brand is composed of many talented teams. Showcase them independently with our new Teams feature. Teams is separate from your company’s org chart, and can complement it to go one step further. Here, you can add employees who belong on your team and share a clear view of who is there. This extra layer of visibility is great for internal and external viewers. For internal use it’s a great first step to listing your company on The Org, because you can start with just your team (no need to complete the full company structure right away). It’s also useful to create social teams - like musicians, or a party planning committee - and to share with new hires as they join. For external use it’s a handy way of publicizing certain teams that you want to highlight in your company. This could be a diversity & inclusion team, your hiring committee or other teams. Not only will this help candidates be prepared for the hiring process, but it can also serve as great employer branding that communicates your company values to those on the outside. Check out this latest feature, live now on The Org! We’d love to hear from you, you can reach us at hello@theorg.com if you have any feedback. Want to try it out for your company?
