Mission

Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.


History



In 1963 at the height of the civil rights movement, 23 headmasters of selective independent schools made a mutual commitment to change the profiles and compositions of their student bodies.  Through A Better Chance, they would broaden their enrollment to include students of color who were economically disadvantaged but academically able.  Chosen for their motivation and demonstrated achievement, 55 students from low-income families were selected to complete their secondary education at these founding independent schools.

A Better Chance Scholars are a racially diverse group.  Approximately 65% are African-American; 20% Latino; 6% Asian American; about 1% Native American; and 8% describe themselves as multi-racial or other.  Approximately one-third live at or below the federal poverty line, and virtually all come from working class families.  More than 65% of our Scholars come from single-parent households.  A Better Chance has grown from 55 students enrolled at nine schools to nearly 1,900 students enrolled in 2008/2009 school year.

The Scholar and Alumni Relations team at A Better Chance fosters connections and provides support to current scholars and alumni. This team engages in mentoring, networking events, and career development opportunities to ensure ongoing success and leadership development for young people of color. They work closely with scholars and alumni to maintain a strong community, facilitate lifelong learning, and aid in their professional and personal growth.

Scholar and Alumni Relations

The Education and Research team at A Better Chance focuses on identifying and analyzing educational trends and outcomes for young people of color. This team evaluates program efficacy, advises on curriculum development, and supports scholars through personalized tutoring and academic guidance. Their ultimate goal is to ensure that scholars are well-prepared to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

Education and Research

The Finance and Operations team at A Better Chance oversees financial planning, budgeting, and administrative functions to ensure the efficient allocation of resources. They manage day-to-day operations, support financial stability, and implement strategic initiatives to help the organization fulfill its mission of empowering young people of color through better educational opportunities.

The Leadership Team at A Better Chance, consisting of the President and CEO, Chief Finance and Operations Officer, and President, is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organization, overseeing operational and financial management, and fostering partnerships to advance the mission of increasing the number of well-educated young people of color who can assume leadership roles in society. They ensure that the organization's goals align with its founding commitment to support academically able students of color from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
