Paul Smith has over a decade of experience in the education sector. Paul started their career as a Co-Director at Secondary Reform Partners, where they directed multiple dropout prevention projects and provided program design and technical assistance to schools. Paul also worked as a Senior Consultant at Education Reform Advocates, LLC. Paul served as a Technical Assistance Specialist at the U.S. Department of Education, developing needs-assessment plans and providing technical assistance to urban districts. Additionally, they worked as a Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, conducting research on healthier lunch options. Paul has also held roles as a Government Relations Specialist at Reading Is Fundamental, an Account Lead at Access411, a Program Evaluator at IMPAQ International, and a Project Management Consultant at Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium Inc. Most recently, they are working as a Project Consultant for COVID-19: Student Reengagement After School Disruption at the National League of Cities, where they are responsible for developing strategies and resources to reengage students affected by the pandemic.

Paul Smith has a Master of Liberal Arts degree from The Johns Hopkins University. Prior to that, they obtained a BA in History from The Catholic University of America. Paul also holds a MAT in Secondary Education from Trinity Washington University. In addition to their degrees, Paul has obtained additional certifications such as the School-Age Program Quality Assessment External Assessor from the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality and M3 Foundations from Keiser Corporation. Paul is also in possession of a Teaching License-Standard from the Maryland State Department of Education.
