James Beck has a diverse and extensive work experience. James started their career at General Motors as a Project Engineer, where they developed a software framework for robotic work cell manufacturing stations. James also invented a custom system-level synthesis tool for distributed embedded systems, contributing to the design of automotive embedded control applications. James then worked at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center as a Research Staff Member before joining Carnegie Mellon University as an Adjunct Professor. At Carnegie Mellon, they co-instructed courses on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications and Introduction to Software Engineering.

James later became the Director of Technology Development at Inmedius, a start-up company spun off from the CMU Software Engineering Institute. James then joined Westinghouse Electric Company, where they held various roles, including Principal Engineer for Next Generation Nuclear Safety Systems and Principal Engineer for Information Systems. In these roles, they led the development of software applications for the AP1000® nuclear reactor and was responsible for revamping the FPGA development process and defining coding standards.

Most recently, James worked at Accuray as a Senior Software Engineer. These roles collectively showcase their expertise in software development and engineering, particularly in the nuclear and manufacturing industries.

James Beck has a strong education history in the field of electrical and computer engineering. In 1988, they received a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Following that, in 1990, they pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University. James continued their education at Carnegie Mellon University, where they obtained a Master of Science (MS) degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1994. James Beck then furthered their education at Carnegie Mellon University and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1995.

In addition to their academic qualifications, James Beck has acquired several certifications throughout their career. In 1997, they became a Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of Indiana. More recently, in 2019, they completed a certification in "Statistics 1: Introduction to ANOVA, Regression, and Logistic Regression" offered by SAS. Additionally, in 2022, they obtained several certifications through LinkedIn, including "Python: Design Patterns," "Python Object-Oriented Programming," "Managing Python Projects," "Advanced Python," "Data Analytics for Business Professionals," and "Learning Python."
