Lukas Hackl, Ph.D. is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Aepnus Technology Inc. He is also an Activate Fellow at Activate, where he empowers scientists to launch startups addressing global challenges. Previously, he worked as a PhD student at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, focusing on desalination technology. He has experience as a visiting researcher at Drexel University and Berkeley Lab, as well as in research and development roles at Tronex Technology and AEG Power Solutions. Additionally, Lukas has a strong background in tutoring mathematics and holds degrees in Environmental and Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Nanotechnology, and Mechanical Engineering and Business.

Aepnus Technology is dedicated to the electrification and decarbonization of the manufacturing process of several commonly used chemicals. In simpler terms, our mission is to create technology that utilizes electricity, preferably from renewable sources, to synthesize chemicals using a process known as electrolysis. Currently, our primary objective is to focus on the electrolytic conversion of sulfate salts into metal hydroxides (caustic), as well as concentrated Sulfuric Acid. This application is especially relevant in the realms of lithium mining, lithium battery recycling, and cathode active materials (CAM) processing.
