Jay Starks has worked in a variety of roles and industries since 1996. In that year, they began working as an English Language Teacher for the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program(me) (JET). From 2000 to 2002, they were an English Composition Instructor at Western Kentucky University. From 2002 to 2007, they were a Teacher for the NYC Department of Education, where they earned NYC permanent tenure in 2005. From 2007 to 2013, Jay was a Teacher for Wake County Public Schools, where they were a Team Leader and Leadership Team Facilitator. From 2013 to 2016, they were a Stay-at-home parent, responsible for primary childcare duties, designing and implementing household operations and procedures, and supervising and managing their child's needs. From 2016 to 2019, Jay worked at the Duke University Office of Admissions, analyzing qualifications of prospective students using established university admissions standards, composing and submitting evaluations and assessments to office staff in a timely and consistent manner, and maintaining strict confidentiality. From 2016 to 2017, they were a freelance editor/writer, proofreading and editing technical proposals adhering to client's specifications and meeting strict deadlines. From 2016 to 2019, Jay was an Education Assistant (temporary) at the Ackland Art Museum, maintaining the Academic Department's database, proofreading and editing reports, correspondence, surveys, and documents for publication on the museum's website, and scheduling tours. Finally, from 2019 to the present, Jay has been the Communications, Member Success, and Social Media Associate at Airside Mobile, managing and prioritizing multiple concerns simultaneously, solving issues that result in a positive customer experience, and collecting, analyzing, and relaying customer feedback to company management regarding customer insights and patterns on operational and technical problems or improvements.

Jay Starks has a Bachelor's Degree in English from The University of the South, obtained between 1988 and 1992. Jay then obtained a Master's Degree in English from Western Kentucky University between 1998 and 2000. Finally, they obtained a Master's Degree in English Education from New York University between 2002 and 2004. Additionally, they have obtained permanent certification in English Education Grades 7-12 from New York State, certification in English Grades 9-12 from North Carolina, and certification in Middle Grades (6-9) Language Arts from North Carolina.
