With over 20 years of experience at Alltech, Charlton's career began as an assistant nutritionist at Frank Wright Ltd from 1987 to 1991. Educationally, Charlton holds a Master of Science in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt University and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Nutrition and Physiology from the University of Nottingham.
