Matthew Smith

Matthew Smith, PE is a seasoned engineering professional with extensive experience in mechanical and robotics engineering. Currently serving as a Senior Robotics Hardware Engineer at Amazon Robotics R&D since April 2024, Matthew leads the module development for Vulcan Stow robotic pod stowing workcells. Previously, as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Amazon from April 2014 to March 2024, Matthew oversaw the development of advanced vision systems for Amazon Go and contributed to biometric identity device innovations. Past roles include Lead Mechanical Engineer at Guido Perla and Associates, where Matthew designed mechanical systems for offshore vessels, and a Mechanical Engineer at Kvichak Marine Industries, responsible for military craft engineering. With a background that includes serving as a Surface Warfare Officer in the US Navy, Matthew holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho.
