Ian Applegate is an accomplished communications professional with significant experience in media relations and event operations within collegiate athletics. Currently serving as the Assistant Director of Communications for the American Athletic Conference since August 2022, Ian is responsible for media relations across eight sports, the production of national print publications, and supporting event operations for major championships. Prior to this role, Ian held positions at The University of Texas at Arlington, where responsibilities included media relations for various sports and a successful social media rebranding initiative, and Seward County Community College, focusing on digital media efforts and event management. Ian's earlier experience includes internships in public relations and a role as Public Relations Coordinator at Peru Community Schools. Educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Indiana University Bloomington and a Master of Arts in Sport Administration from Ball State University.

The American Athletic Conference (The American), a member of the NCAA, was reconstituted in 2013. With the conference office in Irving, Texas, The American is comprised of the following institutions: UAB, Army West Point (in football only), Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Navy (in football only), North Texas, Rice, South Florida, Temple, UTSA, Tulane, Tulsa and Wichita State (basketball and Olympic sports). Under the leadership of Commissioner Tim Pernetti, The American sponsors 20 sports (nine for men and 11 for women); is a member of the College Football Playoff; has television partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports; in the spring of 2019, signed a landmark television agreement with ESPN that commenced in 2020-21; and has a marketing partnership with Learfield.
