John Born

John Born has a diverse work experience in software/data engineering, IT, and educational roles. John started as a Programming Assistant at the US Geological Survey, where they developed scientific models in hydrology. Later, John worked at the Kellogg Company as an IT Intern, where they led workshops on React Native and Git, and developed a mobile app displaying events and resources for Chicago communities. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, they served as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the VRMSL, focused on a swarm robotics project. Moreover, John worked as an ELA and Lead ELA in the Pre-Engineering Program at the University, where they taught Introduction to Engineering and mentored undeclared and Pre-Engineering students. At Groupon, they were a Software/Data Engineer, wherein they migrated existing on-prem data systems to AWS cloud infrastructure. John used tools like AWS S3, EMR, RDS, PySpark, Airflow, and Terraform to modernize Groupon's tech stack. Currently, John works as a Software Engineer at Amperity from April 2021.

John Born attended St. Charles East High School from 2012 to 2016, earning their high school diploma. From 2016 to 2019, they attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where they received their Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering. In June of 2019, they obtained the certification of "Certified SAFe® 4 Practitioner" from Scaled Agile, Inc.
