John Farrell has over 14 years of work experience in software engineering and automation support. John began their career in 2006 as an Automation Support Engineer at Intel Corporation, where they gained experience in UNIX, VMS, Windows server, networks, parallel and distributed systems, complex databases, hardware troubleshooting, workload management, customer support and team work. In 2010, they moved to Oracle, where they worked as a QA Engineer in the WPTG group and gained exposure to the agile style software life cycle. John then joined Symantec in 2011 as a Senior Software Engineer, working alongside 6 full stack Rails developers spread across 3 regions using Kanban to drive the development process. In this role, they were responsible for building and maintaining systems to enable the continuous delivery of malware protection to hundreds of millions of endpoints. John was later promoted to Principal Software Engineer and SQA Engineer, where they focused on improving QA processes through extensive use of automation. In 2020, they joined &Open as a Lead Backend Engineer and Senior Software Engineer.

John Farrell obtained a Leaving Certificate from St Mels in 2003, followed by a BSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering) from Maynooth University in 2008. John then went on to earn an MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering) from Maynooth University in 2012. In 2015, John obtained a Custom Agile Training (Scrum & Kanban) from Trigraph Professional Training. John also earned a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification from SQT Training Ltd in May 2015 and a Tailored MySQL DBA and MySQL Performance & Tuning Training from StayAhead Training Ltd in March 2015.
