James Smithies

Professor Of Digital Humanities & Director HASS Digital Research

James Smithies serves as a Professor of Digital Humanities and Director of HASS Digital Research at The Australian National University since January 2024. Previously, James held several prominent roles at King's College London, including Professor of Digital Humanities and Director of King’s Digital Lab from December 2015 to January 2024. A significant part of James's career includes contributions as a Senior Lecturer in Digital Humanities at the University of Canterbury, where responsibilities included oversight of the Digital Humanities Programme and management of the UC CEISMIC Digital Archive from July 2011 to November 2015. Other experience includes roles as a Senior Business Analyst and Technical Editor at the Ministry of Health New Zealand, as well as various technical writing positions. James attained a Ph.D. in History from the University of Canterbury between 1999 and 2003.
