Derek Alton

Community Insights Lead at Apolitical

Derek Alton has a diverse work experience spanning from 2013 to 2022. In 2013, they Co-Founded and Organized Cottage Shindig on Democracy. In 2014, they completed a Masters in Community Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University, with a research focus on human behaviour and motivation. In 2016, they Co-Founded and Organized Civic Tech Ottawa and was a Curriculum Lead for the Canadian Social Innovation Summit (SPARK!). In 2017, they joined the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat as a Strategy and Partnerships Advisor in the Digital Enablement Division, and later as a Strategic Partnerships Advisor in the Digital Collaboration Division. In 2019, they became President and Co-founder of the Canadian Open Data Society. In 2020, they were a Team Lead for International Projects, Communications and Engagement at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, as well as a Fellow at Newspeak House. Later in 2020, they joined the Privy Council Office as a Communications Advisor. In 2022, they will become Head of Community at Apolitical.

Derek Alton's education history includes a Masters in Community Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University (2014-2016), a Graduate Diploma in Social Innovation from the University of Waterloo (2013-2014), a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science from the University of Guelph (2008-2011), and a Certificate in Leadership from the University of Guelph (2008-2010).
