On December 19, 2014, Appleton Coated was purchased by Virtus Holdings, LLC, a new company formed by members of Appleton Coated’s management team. Virtus Holdings purchased the company from a subsidiary of Sequana SA, which had been the company’s ultimate parent. The company will continue to operate under the name Appleton Coated LLC.

Appleton Coated is a manufacturer and distributor of coated, uncoated, specialty and technical papers sold under the Utopia®, Ethos®, and Altima® brand names. Our products are used in high-end commercial printing, textbook publishing, label papers, transactional printing and a variety of specialty and custom applications. The company serves corporations, publishers, printers, converters, and graphic designers in North America.

Appleton Coated entered the North American coated freesheet market in 1996. The company focuses on the premium end, superior service and flexibility, and leadership in environmental papers and coated papers for high-speed inkjet web printing technology. The company is known as an innovator in collaborative product development and partnerships, and has diversified into several uncoated, specialty and technical product segments. Our customer-driven organization that offers accessibility and flexibility to meet the demands of today's market.

Our corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility are located in Combined Locks, Wisconsin. The facility has an annual production capacity of 400,000 tons on three paper machines, and an adjacent coating and finishing complex with processing capacity of 280,000 tons. The company employs about 570 workers, including approximately 400 employees represented by the USW Local 2-144.

Since 1889, Appleton Coated has manufactured paper in Combined Locks, Wisconsin.

The Engineering and Technical Team at Appleton Coated LLC is responsible for maintaining and optimizing the manufacturing processes, systems, and equipment used in the production of coated, uncoated, specialty, and technical papers. Team members like the Senior Programmer Analyst and Systems Analyst focus on software and system improvements, while roles such as the Associate Controls Engineer and Staff Automation Engineer enhance automation and control systems. The Product Engineering Manager oversees product development, ensuring high-quality output and innovation. Skilled trades like the Millwright, Vibration Tech, and Maintenance Pipefitter handle machinery maintenance and mechanical reliability. This diverse team ensures efficient, safe, and high-quality paper production, supporting the company's commitment to superior service and innovation.
