Dan Starr has a diverse work experience in the field of data science and software engineering. Dan is currently working as a Sr. ML Engineer at Aquabyte since July 2021. Previously, from July 2019 to July 2021, they worked as a Consulting Data Scientist / Data Engineer, where they created a productionized ML framework for consulting projects while retaining rights for future projects.
Prior to that, Dan was a Co-founder / Sr. Staff Software Engineer at Wise.io, acquired by GE Digital. Dan played a key role in improving productionized ML workflows and solutions, leading to the expansion of the GE-Wise group and working on various projects in sectors like Oil & Gas, Healthcare, Aviation, Power, and Renewables. Dan also served as a Co-founder, Product & Implementation Data Scientist at Wise.io, developing machine learning solutions for commercial and industrial domains from May 2012 to November 2016.
Prior to their roles at Wise.io, Dan gained experience as a Data Analytics Software Engineer at UC Berkeley (July 2006 to December 2012), where they conducted research and developed time-series classifiers and algorithms. Dan also developed crowd-sourcing and active-learning web applications for bootstrapping classifiers onto new datasets.
Before that, Dan worked as a Data Analyst and Python Programmer at the Gemini Observatory from June 2004 to June 2006. Their primary responsibilities included optimizing QA software and processes for astronomical data and developing software for calibration and data processing routines.
Dan also worked as a Software Developer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics from February 2004 to July 2004, where they designed, developed, and tested observatory and telescope control systems for the PAIRITEL telescope.
Their early career includes a role as a Software Developer at Los Alamos National Laboratory from October 2001 to October 2003, where they contributed to the development of real-time software pipelines for all-sky optical telescopes.
Dan Starr earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, with a focus on Astronomy, from the University of Washington. Dan attended the university from 1996 to 2001.
